We just received 20+ inches in the last 24 hours. Broke the old record set in 1910 here in Ohio. Doesn't seem as bad as the blizzard of 1978 to me yet, but my memory has faded quite a bit.

I was just wondering what this is going to do to the dismal bird hunting we already have been having. Bird hunters I hunt with are always talking of the "golden days" before the blizzard hit. It's been 30 years and we were just now starting to get quail re-established. Old timers say "1978" hurt the grouse population in the same way.

I've never really bought into that whole excuse, with my argument being that states out west have these types of snowy/cold winters every year and somehow the birds not only survive - but thrive in those states. Since the weather sucks to bad to go outside, anybody want to offer up opinions on how this will effect Ohio birds?

I don't think this will hurt birds much. This snow will go away soon.

Think about all the people at the Ohio Gun Collectors Association meeting at Wilmington this weekend. I had a notion to go, but now I am relieved to be here at home in Western Virginia instead.

Ohiosam, I think you're probably right. Supposed to be in the 50's this week. That means F-L-O-O-D. Too bad we never get these floods during duck season.

Curl, Did they even have the show? If you believe everything you see on the news, it would lead you to believe that the entire state was shut down due to the "WHITE DEATH"!

Some of us here in NH would be pleased if it was just a 20 inch snowstorm.New Hampshire as had over 100 inches in Concord,I am norht of there where many roofs are caving in.The deer are getting hammered, especailly the pregnant does which can not run as fast as the coyotes which are able to chase them over the frozen crust.

I was assuming they had the show, but might be wrong.

I live around Buckeye Lake and we officially got 16", but I saw that Port Columbus airport recorded 20.6 inches. That was the new record I was referring to. To tell the truth, it's hard to tell how much we actually got due to the winds and drifting. 8" on the ground in some spots - 4 foot in others. I think the line of heavy snow was broken up by rain/freezing rain for most of SE ohio. Didn't break my heart that we didn't get any of that, but it does cut the total snowfall numbers back quite a bit when you mix in the rain. IMO this just seems like a good snowstorm. Not the "Blizzard of 08 - white death is upon us" that the TV stations are reporting. I talked to some people in Athens and they gave same type of accumulations that you are reporting.

Isn't this punishment for Ohio voting for Hillery?? The bad winter December 1968 into January 1969 killed off our Quail here in Washington in droves. The game department then dumped out ditch chickens in a lot of the old Quail areas and it took 30 years for the Quail to fully come back. Now with our heavy deep snow this winter I think it has happened again. Skitso and I haven't moved a bird on our morning walks since we returned home from the Las Vegas show. Prior to that we use to average four big coveys in our walk around the neighborhood.
