I happened to ask my brother about the model 12, 20 gauge. He got when my Grandfather passed away. He said, I still have it, but I cut the barrel off at 18" for a home defence gun. I told him I have a Mossberg 500, 12 gauge, pistol grip, 8 shot tube. He can have for the 20 gauge. I now have my Grandfathers gun, but need to find a replacement barrel. Will any model 12, 20 gauge barrel fit. Gun is from the late 40's early 50's I think.

The Mossberg was a pretty good slap, but your brother needed slapped around more than that for what he did! You should make him pay for another barrel, if you can find one.

M12 and 42 barrels attach to the receiver by way of a interrupted thread barrel extension. Fitting a barrel to the extension will require a smith. Even if you locate a "complete" 20 ga M12 barrel (with extension andmagazine tube) the M12/42 takedown system is very different than that used by Remington and Mossberg. It demands closer tolerances. Therefore, the short answer to your question is: no.

It is possible that you would stumble upon a barrel/extension that will just happen to work. But this is unlikely. The good news is that if you find a lost puppy 20 ga barrel/extension it can be fitted to your receiver. I can recommend Simmons for such work.

Geez, getting back onto this BBS was almost as tough as finding a front end for a 20 gauge Model 12. Now that I'm finally back in, I gotta contact Dave.

Browning Model 12 parts may work on your Win frame. I know a guy who mated a Browning Mod 42 front end to a Win 42 frame, and he now shoots a Brownchester for skeet. Seems to work just fine. There will probably be issues with the rib extension if your gun didn't originally have one.

If you can find a good barrel it can be fitted to your extension. You will have to find a gunsmith that is experienced with Mod 12s. I have seen 20 ga model 12 barrels on Ebay. You do not need the extension and magazine parts if the one on the cgun are good, just the barrel. Good luck.

Easiest place to find a replacement bbl. is E-Bay.If you get just a bbl. it will reguire some fitting to be done by a smith that knows Md.12's. If you get a complete front end asy., or a bbl and receiver extension, it may fit. But odds are it will need a little work also.
The best place to have Md.12 work done (at a affordable price) is Wright's Gunsmithing in Pickneyville Ill. Contact them for price info and any information that you may need.

Maybe you can have that barrel sleeved. You can then have any configuration you want.
