I've seen this Scott gun with several maker's names on them. They are good guns.

Here are some cool fences, IMHO, on an early H&H Royal:

I also love Purdey's oak leaf fences.

...and I've heard the opposite.
Never the less, a William Evans marked gun was top drawer - no matter who made them.
Btw Nitro, why would an ex-Evans worker have to root, if what you say is true hmmmm?
I'd say William Evans had a rich history in the trade!

Riband or Trefoil, they must have been a fairly common pattern. Here's another I've seen.

With the same treatment, here's a nice Joseph Lang Webley A&WC .450/.400 double rifle sold by Champlin's a couple years ago, this photo being from Champlin's website.

And here's another Lang Webley double rifle featured in Double Gun Journal a couple years ago; this one in .577 2 3/4" BPE.

Very nice treatment of the fences, indeed.

For a bit of reference material, here's a link to a scan of the Webley & Scott 1914 Catalog (Adobe PDF, 7.6mb file).

http://rbsiii.com/nitro_express/Webley%20&%20Scott%201914%20Catalog.pdf

Shotguns with this treatment are featured on pages 20 and 21 of the catalog; the sidelock W & R 1st being on page 20.

Carved, sculpted or sculptured fences seems like reasonable terminology. I'm SO happy nobody said "you have very attractive balls".
Thanks to all for the wonderful pictures.

The Brits would be more likely to say "You have very attractive detonators."

I would say you are.

At a time when a "best" bar-action London SLE would be 60 guineas, these might have been 50, give or take a few pounds. There are tons of guns like these out there (many Evans included), not all made to this standard of fit & finish, though.

The higher grades, with fences such as these, are (can be) excellent guns.

These guns don't appear to be screw grips. William Evans Pair
