Birchwood-Casey has a product called "Gun Wax". It's reasonably priced and seems to be OK on metal and wood. However, I still prefer a wipedown rag. If I knew I was going to be out in the rain(not likely where I live) I would probably cover wood and metal with something simple and inexpensive like Johnsons Paste Wax.

RenWax is conservation stuff, it doesn't stand up well to actual field use. If I have it correctly it's what's termed a microcrystalline wax, meaning it will fill the pores in the steel better than a conventional wax.

I use it for guns in storage, it resists my grubby little fingerprints when I sit around fondling them late at night, don't have to be so vigilant about wiping down or wearing cotton gloves.

I also like to use it to coat surfaces under the wood line after tearing down a gun.Doesn't stain like oil.

Not at all good for weather though, use paste wax.

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

I use Trewax. The one for floors. If it's tough enough to walk on it should be ok for the gunstock, and it works well on the metal also. The only problem is if you get it in checkering it dries white. For that problem I simply apply a thin coat to all checkered areas then buff with a horsehair shoe brush which gives a nice sheen to checkering.

They also make a tinted version that is a beige-very light brown color which I am currently using.

Neither of these is as expensive as the Renwax and I can find in most good hardware stores, and get several pounds for the price of one Renwax.
