I'm having the wood on an LC Smith freshened up, and the recoil pad (currently a Pachmyr whiteline) will be replaced too. I like the Pachmyr Sporting Clays pad on another gun I shoot, but figured I'd ask you guys for other options that are out there. Whatever pad is selected, it needs to be an inch thick.
If it matters, the gun is a 1920s Specialty grade, 12 ga, and the butt is rather small.
Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Norm, I believe the correct period pad would be either a Silver's or a Hawkins. Also I believe that Jotsam, NoShoc were also available, but Hawkins was very popular during the 20's and 30's. Pachmayer White Line was never an available option for L.C.'s during the Hunter era, only after Marlin took over in 1945 was it available.

Stick with the Pachmayr SC - very practical, and looks a lot better on the gun than those godawful orange Silvers pads.

Hi Norm, I don't see in your post that you are asking what is "period correct". If you want that, follow the other replies. If you want some serious recoil reduction, I'd recommend the Pachmayr. The Sporting Clays model, SC100 does what it's designed for but I mostly install the D752 Old English, on my guns and jobs for friends. I shoot "low gun" on everything escept trap but don't feel the need for the plastic heel on the SC100,any more. You mentioned the butt is rather small. Have the installer get the smallest pad that will work correctly. Less grinding and the pad will retain the rounded areas better than one that starts out larger than necessary.

Go for the "ugly orange" Hawkins pad - they look better and are correct. IMHO, nothing looks worse than a modern pad on an older SxS. Paul

I just installed an oversize pad on my L C Smith that I bought from Galazans which they maintain is the proper one for a Smith. I believe they have these in either 1" or 1 1/2" thicknesses. I installed the 1 1/2" one to correct the poorly ended out stock on my gun. I would agree that grinding down a pad this thick and getting it right is a real challenge. Good luck. Jim

Unfortunately, the Hawkins repro from Galazans is not the correct period pad. The Hawkins with the heart shaped holes is the correct pad for guns in the 1930s, a Jostam Anti-Flinch would be more correct for guns from the teens or 1920s. A "Silver" type pad was usually for guns of Crown Grade and above.

Before 1908, the pad commonly offered was the Silver From 1908-1914 The Silver and American Silver [Grieb] were offered
In 1915 The American Silver was offered as Goodrich and the Jostam Huntley Sponge and Jostam Anti Flinch came on the market.
In 1918 the Perkins Solid Red pad and the Jostam 1-layer, 2-layer, and 3-layer sponge pads were brought out.
In 1920 the Jostam Air Cushion [Silvers looking] came out
1925 found the Hawkins pad with shape like the leather faced one above above
1927 found the DW and Jostam Hy Gun
In the 30s the Jostam with the horizontal side flute, Hawkins with vertical web, Red Head, NoKick, H and R, NoShoc,
1937 shows the Ithaca sunburst and
1939 shows the White Line
