I don't see in your post that you are asking what is "period correct". If you want that, follow the other replies. If you want some serious recoil reduction, I'd recommend the Pachmayr. The Sporting Clays model, SC100 does what it's designed for but I mostly install the D752 Old English, on my guns and jobs for friends. I shoot "low gun" on everything escept trap but don't feel the need for the plastic heel on the SC100,any more. You mentioned the butt is rather small. Have the installer get the smallest pad that will work correctly. Less grinding and the pad will retain the rounded areas better than one that starts out larger than necessary.
