The doorstop, boat-anchor, too expensive at $50.00 Beesely was at $205.00 this morning. Anyone care to guess where it will end up? Having seen absolute junk, cut down Elsies and Parkers go for more, I'll be shocked if it goes for less than $900-$1000. You know someone out there is thinking they can whittle a stock, J-B Weld a forend loop, TIG the holes in the rib, and have a London gun for a song. In the deep dark recesses of my mind, I was hoping it would level out at the $50-$75 level. So were lots of other people.

I had a first year model 12 reblued, but, mostly 'cause it was getting my hands rusty. It looks EXACTLY like a reblued model 12. I also refinshed the case colors on a Charlin, but, I think it was so I could say I did it. The gun didn't shoot any better.

I've come to a point where I'm beginning to realize my 47 year old biorhythms are a lot more suspect to my bad days of shooting than any stock measurements. What else explains picking up a stone stock 60 year old Ithaca 37 16 and knocking down the first pheasant I've ever shot at with the gun, and backing it up on the trap field with 23 when it was 10 degrees below zero? Even if the gun had a rib, the address wouldn't matter.

But, the shooting does.

I owned a Holland, and a sundry assortment of other desirable and useful guns. They just became more desirable or useful (we can all hope) to someone else. The ones that are left, are few, working class, and are here because of one simple reason.

Stuff falls out of the sky when I pull their triggers. Usually.

I disagree. This is about 'hangar flying'. Nuthin wrong with some, once in a while. Jus' watch out for the wall.

How did that ol' saying go? "One man's trash is another man's treasure." So some guns are for one person and not for another........ I have to say one thing about staining a rubber pad- nothing looks worse than seeing an old gun with a nice new shiny orange pad sticking out like a sore thumb. So some people stain them just to tone them down since they might not want to wait 30 years to age them normally. I bought a Model 21 that was serial numbered below 100 once with a new orange pad on it. Nope, it had to go.

Do you take advice from a guy who has taken a test ride or two, or from an actual owner?

The candor "window" is narrow for owners and closed on the day he buys it and the day he sells. I imagine there's a good deal of hot air spouted by those who have writer's cramp from all the zeros on the check and those who don't. Why does having possession of a gun (particularly a high dollar collectible) make one the sole trustworthy source of information? The opinion of those who have shot the spit out of them (Keith) and the mechanics who have fixed them (Trevallion) carry more weight. And who leads the collectors by the nose? The historians.
