I am looking at a prewar SXS, but the four digit set of serial numbers do not fit sequence in the Gebruder Merkel record. there are makers marks look like an oval, within the oval, are a capital O in double outline form, like an o within an O. at the other end of the oval, is another mark not cognizable. looks like a frontal view of seagull wings? could be a short legged M with a line under it. teh same makers mark is on the action flats and on each barrel. no other information available, except the black-ivy vine engraving looks appropriate to the period.

Definitely NOT the GEME typical to Gebruder Merkels of hte day. wondering if any oscar merkel afficionados can help? send me an email, and I can mail pictures, or if someone can help I can forward the proofmarks and photos.

thanks to Dave for the board, adn the board for the help.

Nothing springs to mind (hey, it's early) about a maker, but if you would like I'll be happy to post your pictures if you will send them to bpesteve -at- yahoo dot com

If it dont say "merkel", it aint no "merkel".
Could be a "merkel" type,as unmarked could be "guild".

Whatzit say on the bbls? Merkels are always marked on the bbls.
I never seen one not marked, except for gdr farmers guns which all came from one factory.
This one should say "Merkel Brothers/weichlot/boehler" or something.

I have several Merkels that are not marked merkel. they do have the GM in a shield, though they were sold under different makers name and so stated on the ribs.

never seen a gebruder merkel below serial number 10,000.

Can anyone see a way to view the other part of the fish as an "S" like "S.u.k." or "S. & K."? Sempert & Krieghoff began in the mid 1880s and acquired Schilling around 1904. Heinrich Krieghoff parted company in 1916 but returned around the death of Ludwig Krieghoff in 1924. Krieghoff had the ability to make any components and made rifles for Schuler for his 12.7X70mm. I believe Merkel was or is in a portion of the old Krieghoff plant. And I'm trying to remember if Adolf Schade was a part owner.

Kind Regards,

Raimey
