Wow. I'll add my vote to the growing crowd who would love details of how you did what you did. Woodwork, metalwork, finishes, percentage of bat urine in the case hardening pack, the whole works. We would be forever indebted for you to share your skills. Ever thought of writing a gunsmithing book?

I own a 16 ga with an earlier serial number of 445xx. The engraving is a little different and it does have a dolls head and hidden third fastener. According to my Smith the proof marks date it between 1896 - 1904. Not sure if that helps you too much.
Thanks, because you have jogged my memory to write the U. of Glasgow to get definitive info on mine.

Matter of fact I have,...it was suggested to me some time ago and although I have a few tricks up my sleeve I would have to think up a whole set of new ones to fill a book!...and if I give up all my tricks who would buy the book?? Thank you again CJ

The University of Glasgow has all of the Army & Navy records. You can e-mail the Duty Archivist at dutyarch@archives.gla.ac.uk and they'll send you the date of sale, price and probably who bought it. More information can be obtained by sending payment.

From "London Gunmakers" by Nigel Brown your A&N dates to 1909-1910
Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought stupid, than open it and confirm.

I would say that the gun was very fortunate that you found it.Think of all the guns that end up being "restored" by less skilled hands.God most certainly is in the details. Thanks for the pictures.

Anyone care to venture an opinion as to what this, or any other such skillfully restored/remanufactured/reincarnated gun, should sell for? Up to now, restoration has not sold well. Is this changing? Is the market now more open to restoration items?
