I need a little advice on this one ....

I got this old Spanish shotgun as part payment on some work I did for a friend ( He knew I was looking for a double barrel 12 gauge )

The stock has a bad crack on it and looks to be clean thru
Below are a few pictures so you can see the damage
I did some research and found the year to be about 1934
The shot gun has some nice engraving on it so I would like to take a shot at repairing the stock
Anybody have any helpful hints... ????
On the first picture the crack is to the left of the start of the checkering . The second picture it can be seen a little better

First thought is that it looks to be broken clear through, a long way from a crack. If you can get it apart, some threaded steel pins, inserted long ways, so they don't show from the outside and lots of good epoxy. If you want a near invisible, professional job, contact Bob Fulton, in Glenrock, WY. It might cost more than the gun is worth but the repair will be a good one.

Bob is a friend of mine and does good work. He's not cheap but you'll get what you pay for. Looking at his pictures might give you some ideas.

Bob did a gun for me, and I was very pleased. I didn't think the cost was bad at all.

I've found that soaking the stock 12-24 hours in acetone not only removes all the old finish and most if not all oil staining, but disolves old glue used in stock repairs. That way you can re-repair the break using modern adhesives.

Is the current repair solid? If so, the cosmetic work is not too hard. If it is suspect, you will need to take the break apart. That is do-able, but more effort and higher skill level.

The cosmetic work looks to me like soaking in some brown stained Acra-glas epoxy and recutting the checkering would get the job done. In that case, you would need the smallest Acra-Glas kit from Brownell's and a single line checkering tool.
