KN - you have a very serious problem!! You need to sell all 3-4 and start over. Alternatively, you can set the 3-4 aside and buy more candidates.

I'm looking at the statistical side of this question. It really is a good question, too. Clay target scores are one indicator, but may not be definitive. For example, I just finished 1000 trap targets with the NID 4E trap gun. I broke 927. There were 7 scores of 25 and one score of 19. The average per round is 23.175 and one standard deviation is 1.43. The average per 100 is 92.7 with a 1SD of 3.47. Any 100 bird score below 89 is cause for rejection of that gun or above 96 will be cause for further investigation. That gives me a strong base line for comparing my performance with other guns. Skeet, 5-stand, sporting clays, or field notes can also get the same treatment. The advantage of objective data is to keep bias for or against a gun out until you really understand how well you shoot it.

I knew you would come through!!! Although I shoot low gun at all disciplines it surely doesn't duplicate field conditions. Also, I'm not sure how the low number of shots taken at live game fit into the mix. I'm afraid a rejection rate of 89 or less would leave me with nothing to shoot!!

KN - those numbers are for me only. You will have to get your own. If you sold those 3-4 you would be able to afford to buy some numbers.

Seriously, I think that objective numbers based on several recorded scores and/or a shooting journal kept over some time period will help alot in determining what you shoot well. Write it down where you can find it later. Statistical analysis (at least use averages) helps put objective scores to better use. Compare this to determining rifle accuracy where you need to evaluate group size - statistics help a lot: biggest, smallest, average, and 1SD!

It may be a joy to "dance with a ballerina," but when you are "diggin' in the dirt," you want one who can chop wood and carry water.

Bluebirds don't fly here in the colder months. My point was some days feature much nicer weather for man and machine, and my doubles get used on those days.

Rocketman, cold statistics will not completetly eliminate the human element. Make sure you aren't on a cold streak or in the midst of a slump when you sell something.

Agree, Ted. That is exactly why I recommend keeping records over some time period. The flip side is the gun honeymoon. Averages are most useful things.

Rocketman, you are starting to weird me out with your numbers stuff - Spinning every shotgun you can find to determine moments of inertia about multiple axis, reducing the world market place for all shotguns into a matrix, calculating Sd for your shooting scores. Do you have a shotgun with a laptop built into the buttstock or an HP calculator on your duck call lanyard? Final questions: - Is Rain Man your favorite movie and does your wife wears clothes with physics and statistics formulae printed on them? Come on this is shooting and it is for fun not statistical analysis! And I am not going to keep records on my shooting! It is embarrassing enough without statistical proof I don't practice enough.

1+1 = 2.001 --- yep, you are using the wrong gun. 2+2 = 4.0365 --- yep, you paid way too much for it. 3+3 = 6.0832671 ---, sorry, I can't predict any hope for your shooting. You left out the laser stock cast measuring system in the current SSM; I thought that was a good 'un, too. "Autumn Skys", not "Rain Man." My wife is very supportive. Well, not to the point of letting scientific inscriptions interfere with being well dressed. To quote one five year old child genius, "What could be more fun than algebra?"
