There is always the Wonko way. Paint the stock a solid color and stick on nekked ladies' photos and happy faces with bullet holes in them.

"Ink" is to stocks with no figure as implants are to girls with no figure, stain to tanning and make-up, and finish to a dress. Some need more help than others, but all need a little something.

Years ago an artist friend pointed out, rightly I feel, that light colors tend to dazzle, but are quickly found wanting in interest, whereas darker colors continue to please. Mind you, our conversation was not some artsy foray into the abstract - we were taling about gunstocks and why there seems to be a preference for darker wood.

The gun fits me well and is not too heavy at 7 pounds 0 onces.

I think that the gun would be a real knockout with nice dark walnut installed. I do admire great wood in any use.

Thanks for your input,

Hello Mr. Franchi;
We did one a few years ago for the same reason -- The factory stock was awful looking, too short, and not worth putting a pad on. This is how it came out -- first double gun we stocked, and far from proffesional, but still happy with it.

Good luck if you go ahead with on it

You could try some Behlen " Solar-Lux" stain. It works right over the old finish on some finishes. You get it at woodcraft stores.

Hi Kraft:

WOW! That is what I am talking about!!!!

That looks great. Will you tell me about how much a piece of wood that looks like that will cost me? Perhaps others can inform me as to the cost and source of wood like that.

I have learned long ago to spend as much money as possible on the wood due to the fact that your time is the major cost of any project.

Any help out there?

Franchi;
That blank cost an even 200 bucks at the time -- Got it from a guy in California -- Wally something?? He sent me pictures of 6 or 8 blanks, and this one was the standout, however it had some white wood along the bottom edge. We took a chance on it, made a window template, and danced around until we found a layout that stayed in the good wood except for a small spot on the bottom of the round knob. About the size of a dime once it was shaped. "Colored" it with Grumbacher acrylic (Burnt Siena), and then painted on a little mineral streaking with black, thinned with alchohol so it would go through a technical pen. Some folks can see it -- most can't.
My buddy the gunsmith and I sent a batch of blanks down to Wenig's for machining at $80.oo each at the time (his price, and they are charging more nowdays), so, counting the pad, I have about 300 bucks in it -- Don't know what my time is worth -- doesn't matter, as I do it for the love of it.

The Kessie and Katie are form my wifes home computer. If you want I could forward some pics of my SKB restock. I am struggling with a new laptop.
The costs on mine were,
Stock Blank 150.00 Ten years ago
Wenig rough shapiing the wood to 90 percent 275.00
Checkering from Sherry Abraham 275.00

I did my won inletting,finishing and pad work as well as covering teh pad with leather. I really like Krafts round knob on the pistol grip. I used Ebony on mine. Didn't think to have Wenig round it when they shaped it.
