Yes AYA says that a standard 12ga Nº53 should weigh around 3300 grams. I suppose that boring to .740" took 100 grams away plus the same quantity bored from the stock it made the current 3.1 kgs. I forgot mentioning that ejectors work fine and the forend is rather stiff to remove too, but this is so far my only minor complain. In summary it works fine with feral pigeons and makes a very good upland gun al the same time. Next month I will make barrel regulation with it, following advise and training given by Brian Bilinski from Fieldsport Ltd, Travese City, Michigan.

Does anyone have any info on AyA being a tube maker or source of tubes?

Kind Regards,

I have an older model, I believe that it is a 171 or something like that. It was discontinued around 82 I believe. It is a little more crude than a #2 and has a third bite on the breach face. I purchased it. The firing pin was broken when it arrived. I sent it to Jack Rowe for a overhaul. I bent and extented the stock to my measurments. I have dragged it all over SE New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. The finish was not in good shape and has not improved. It has hit the ground on more than one occasion...as I seem to have barb wire and badger hole magnets in my boots. It killed more quail in the o5 season than many of you poor fellows from the East will ever see.

Last season I was shooting particularly well due to some preseason practice.

I love the gun but I believe that all Spanish guns are the same if you pay the same. I also have a couple of Arrietas that are so pretty that they are pretty much target guns or spares for my AYA.

What is the gram to ounces conversion anyway? I had no idea that a 29" Model 53 could be made at less than seven pounds. Most I have seen have been fairly porky pigeon guns with beavertails. EJ, that must be a really nice gun you have.

Eightbore,

Roughly speaking, it is 28grams to the oz, but here is a link to the best conversion source on the net that I know of, please take a look, you'll likely bookmark it ;-)

28.35 grams = 1 ounce Av. http://www.metric-conversions.org/weight/grams-to-ounces.htm for a converter where you plug in the number of grams and get back the number of ounces. Answer: 28.35 g = 1.00001 oz. from the converter.

On the question of AYA making tubes - I suppose that refers to choke tubes, maybe John Boyd will respond. My guess is AYA does not make them, and that Briley or Teague choke tubes are the main ones installed if a customer wants them.

A video about Mastering the Double Gun showed a couple of E.J. Churchill guns that must have cost five or six figures that had Briley choke tubes installed. If they knew of anything better, they probably would have used it.

My guess is that if a gun is ordered with choke tubes, it gets built (maybe with no choke work done to the barrels), imported, sent to Briley for the installation, then back to the importer to be delivered.

I have a good friend who has a beautiful custom AYA53 that he had built for him.
He won't admit it, but he was ready to shot someone with it when he first got it. The single selective trigger he paid almost $2g's for doubled when he fired the left barrel first (on occasion). Not a go thing for a dbl bought to be a target gun!

It was repaired by several different people in the USA (no names for the sake of liabilities. He also received poor service from the dealer/importer he custom order it from.) Eventually it was sent back to AYA where they replace the trigger with a double trigger. THEY DID NOT GIVE HIM ANY OF HIS EXTRA $2000 BACK!

The gun works fine now although it doubled again, but this time it just had a loose screw. It really is beautiful,it has wonderful custom engraving. Let the buyer beware..... and don't under any circumstances buy a SST from a spanish maker, period!

BTW, I have an Arrietta for JAck J. that has had 1000+ rounds through it so far and it is flawless.

Eightbore,

yes I am quite happy with my AYA Nº53, I wish I had ordered it with assisted opening. The more I think of bespoke guns there more I like the idea of self openers is beign a brilliant one.

As regards to choke tubes, the AYA people can fix Briley ones in your new gun, I think they install them locally. If you refer to barrels, there is one factory that provides all Basque fine manufacturers with them; they are made the traditional way according to Terry Wieland´s book. EJ
