The .410 looks original to me - others, no way.

The sideplates on the .410 look original. The top lever and tang area has been torched.

I wrote the guy and told him we were watching.

I wonder what he will do?

Regards

Greg,

As long as people keep buying from him he will keep the torch burning. I recall my years in college a used car salesman was warned, arrested and fined for packing differentials with sawdust to "keep them quiet". People kept buying form his because his prices were too good! Ed is the same kind of fellow.

To add my 2 cents, I'm with the crowd that says they're not original and further, I think it's not even real casehardening colors. I believe it's been torched with some kind of process using a solution IMO. Oscar described a process using a torch and a solution, I think cold blue.

One additional thing that makes me think faked colors is the beadblasted finish on the watertable.

The 410 looks as though it might be original, but it only serves to make the others look more "funky".
The fore end irons and safetys on the funky ones looks as though they've been blackened which is also unusual.
I don't know as much about the Smith's as I would like to, but this collection just looks strange.
He is getting a lot of action, I hope who ever gets one of these guns is happy with it when they get it in their hands.

Chuck H,

I think you are right. I was thinking the same thing. If all he did was apply a coloring agent with a low temp torch, then that is fine with me. Most of the coloring looks half way decent. Not sure how much control he had over the process.

I really should play around with that...

After looking at the entire collection, I'll change my earlier vote and say they are redone, not original, but I don't think they are torched. If these are torched, someone is an artist.

This one colors appear to go right over the top lever.

Got a tiger by the tail there! The bronze gold is overrunning the edge of the right lockplate and carrying right onto the bar as if done as a single piece without dissassembly. The upper tang and lever is something to behold. My '41 16FW has mostly motley greys (what I call rumors of case color)and I'm beginning to prefer it that way! If there were actually "art" to faking, it would have to incorporate the awareness that big puddles of color are confined within the borders of the individual part. Probably shouldn't suggest this. Let's see if the next one is less gaudy and harder to distinguish from the real deal.
