I am wondering if the Philly SW's had the plain grip cap or the one with the checkered oval. I have seen both; just wondering if both were used by the company. This would be a 16, #353xxx. Thank you!

Philly 16 ga #35362X has cove, bead and checkered oval field.

I have 16 ga Sterlingworth #3575XX and it has the checkered grip cap. I think the checkered grip cap was used on S'worths until the early twenties when the round plain cap begins to appear. Your gun is from early production (1916-1917)and it most likely had the checkered cap. Paul

My 1910-vintage The Sterlingworth Co. gun has a cap with horizontal grooves. All my other Sterlingworths from 1912 up through 1922 have the grip cap with the checkered oval. My next S-worths are 1928 and 1929 and they have the smooth caps.

Ivory Beads has a Sterlingworth 12ga for sale (#3465) with pistol grip and a horizontal grooved cap. Serial number 63007, around 1912 production. At first I didnt think the cap original, but after reading Researcher's post, it seems to an original cap.
