A friend bought a Fox model B in .410. Vent rib, checkered stock and forend. Nice little gun, about 85% condition...a shooter.

The oddity is that it has a Phillips screw holding the rib on at the breech end and it looks to me like it had been case colored on the receiver but most is worn away. He says that it was some kind of special finnish that Fox put on a few of these guns.

We patterned it today, and one barrel shoots about 8" left and 2" low at 25 yds.

The other barrel patterns about 2" low but centered left to right.

I have heard that patterns can be moved around a little by filing the muzzle a little out of square to the bore.

Is this true? Could one move the pattern 8" at 25 yds? and who would be a good person to do the job?

RedHawk,

I have a Model B 12ga, c. 1960, with the vent rib; it too has a Phillips screw holding the rib on at the breech, so I'm guessing that's standard. Mine has regular case coloring and also has walnut w/real checkering, not the later pressed checkering. As far as moving the pattern around I can't help you there.

Redhawk,
There's a guy named Bob Day in Pico Rivera, CA that advertises this work. Also, you might call one of our members that specializes in bore work, Mike Orlen in Amherst, Mass. 8" at 25 yds is about 1/2 a degree angle. Seems like a lot, especially for a 410, but these guys should be able to assess if this is a fixable condition.

He needs to liquidate that defective toy and get a real gun that works. If one must stick with a toy gun Huglu of Turkey makes a cutie on a tiny scaled frame.

For once I agree with the meister. However, Jag, don't let to go to your head. I don't intend to make a habit if it! ;^)

We are not as far apart as you may think laddie. The only .410 kaliber I long for is Winnie 42, or it's reincarnated version made for Browning by B.C. Miroku? You know one of them 1 of 6000 series guns.

Bob Day is good at this kind of job. As I understand it, he hones the chokes slightly off axis until the gun shoots where it is supposed to. He did this on a BSS Sporter that I now own, and it opened from M/F to Light Mod and Imp Mod. The first time I ever shot this gun, I suddenly believed I was the world's greatest bird hunter. The feeling lasted until I picked up a different gun.
