Most of the Spanish and Italian makes use the Holland & Holland lock design. Does anyone make a copy of the Purdey lock for their SxS? Is one lock better than the other? Is the Purdey too difficult to copy or too expensive? Does one "feel" better to shoot? General thoughts and comments.

The Holland & Holland is a barrel-cocking bar action lock.
The Purdey is a spring-cocking bar action lock.
They work on entirely different principles.
The Holland lock is simpler, easier and cheaper to make and can cope with being made in lower qualities.
The Purdey lock is not easy to make, is costly to make and can only be made as abest quality gun out of the best materials. It is more complex and less conventional.
The Purdey lock was adapted by Atkin for production by his firm (also now made by Charles Hellis) and the Purdey lock will also be found on guns made by English gunmakers, notably Beesley, its inventor. David Sinnerton made a Purdey-action gun of superlative quality a few years ago and I have seen a decent copy by Ugartachea.

I have seen a Beesly that was not a self opener.
What was the cost of the Ugartechea?

I own a MC-11 which is a Russian copy of the Purdey action. Not a lot is known of these guns in the West. My gun is a 1960's vintage, however, I believe a smilar version is currently being produced in Russia. This is the best gun I have owned and I have had a few high grade English guns over the years.
Regards,
Max

AyA copied a Purdey for the AyA #1/Senior, very fine guns, but scarce. Beesley and Atkin firms both made Beesley action self-openers and sold guns with some degree of Birmingham connection. Both actions are of sufficient design to make up best guns. There is no fundamental difference in their handling or shooting.

For modern iterations of Rocketman's list, also "new" Beesley action guns made by:
PV Nelson P Chapman Watson Bros Hartmann & Weiss
(Perhaps the new Holloway & Naughton)? John Keen is their actioner and certainly did his fair share with PV Nelson.
Also I believe the Belgians have copied it on occasion.
The AyA version is supposedly very good but as R-man says no longer made.

Some H&H clone actions are nice, but do you really want to own a "dime a dozen" SL-actioned gun?

Beesley (Purdey) actions must have been somewhat available in the UK--last year I saw a 20 bore made by Don Masters of Churchill fame which utilized a Beesley self-opening action. Does anyone know who might have produced the action Don utilized? Chris Batha mentioned a name to me, but I cannot remember who it was.

Max-
A friend of mine owns a Russian SXS made on Beesley action. I'll see if I can dig up some pics of it.
What is your's like?
I know Thad Scott had one on his site last year. I've read about a few others, too.
The one my friend owns was made for a British diplomat. It's a beautiful gun.
BTW: this same friend makes a few Beesley-actioned SXS under his own name every now and then. He's an former Purdey stocker, working for the trade in London.
