Aesthetically, does any double have cleaner, more elegant lines than my 1915 20-gauge L.C. Smith, Field Grade? Practically, with 28-inch barrels and choked CYL/F, is there a better partridge gun?

Well its a sidelock and sidelocks have beautiful lines more so than any boxlock no matter how you pretty them up with frame bosses. Never liked the weight or balance of the Smith, a little to heavy in all gauges for my taste. However, if I was out in the middle of no where fending for myself, of all the sidelocks produced I'd take a Smith!!!

My vote for American sidelocks would be the early Lefevers, but that does in no way diminish the Elsies.

Personally, I'd take a Parker or a Fox any day over a Smith.
And I think they look much more elegant and gracefull.
You just can't beat a nice, light, G or D grade, 20 gauge Parker, with 28" Damascus barrels, choked .004" and .012" for Grouse and Woodcock.

I would take 3 Ithaca NIDs over any similar grade Parker and stronger too. Parkers are like 21's way over priced for what they are. I do like my 1907 20 ga Elsie though.

Yes, Charlins in the plainest dress are well-made and businesslike. Even a 10 ga. Lefever has the elegance of not retaining more than it needs and altho I don't have one, the smallbores give the lie to their apparent delicacy with their resilience. I like my FW16 LC but not to the point of running my eyes back and forth along its delicious lines for hours on end.

IMO there is nothing now or before nicer than the Syracuse L.C.'s. made here or anywhere. They never made a 20 ga. but I would little myself to carry this.  So I will settle for this 20 ga. Ideal grade
