If that was your intent, then I completely misread it. After your comment on the "Spanish Lady" thread in which you stated "how do you know she's a lady?", I figured you had something against Spanish guns. Apparently, however, that is not the case.

Please accept my apologies.

I share your enthusiasm for the elegant, yet simple, lines of American field grade doubles --especially an "Elsie." I also can appreciate all the work that goes into a quality Spanish double. Both are guns that I would be proud to own and love to shoot.

Apologies never expected or wanted by me, David. Every one here is of good heart. Sometimes we're a little cranky but we all know why we're here.

One of the rules of journalism is not to use the term lady in referring to a woman, unless she's cap L. Who's to say a woman is a lady in a news story?

That's why I asked for a report on refinement of the Spanish beauty: class to her bones or all powder and rouge, by the man who has taken her on!

Ah yes, spanish ladies, I love them!! So true of the fine english ladies that I have also come to know and love. The american ladies can be quite charming, but to be honest the european ladies have stolen my heart!!

That's a nice gun and a great job on the photography/lighting.

I like LCs, Fox's, Parker's, Lefever's, Rem's, Some of the nicer Spanish guns, and the occasional English and Euro guns. I appreciate good machinery no matter the source.

I've also started to come the realization that I can't have them all nor do I need to have all that appeals to me to appreciate/enjoy them. Keep those great pics coming.

It's possible to have mixed feelings about both the decorative arts and the tools of the Red Gods all in one lifetime. To decorate the thing shot or shoot the thing decorated? His BV1 vs. my Revelation. Is one boxstock Baikal enuf? What's fair to a quail vs. how many gunbearers for Africa. Oppositions will make you crazy; enjoy the part you enjoy while you can but don't expect "her" to pull like the off-mule and still look good behind a fan in the drawing room.

Your last line is my morning smile, rabbit. Guns can't be protected from inevitable abuse in the field, for sure. What concentrates my mind is the thought that in a few years I'll be at the "old" age that my father died. So my beauties share the blind and bush and somehow always look sweet to my eye. Who am I saving them for?

I like to think we can have it both ways with a little care and forethought. Most all of my guns were bought with the intent of using them for their intended purpose. Although I don't own a "Best Gun" in the London gun sense, my personal best guns stay home when it appears like it will be a day of sleet or downpours. Then even the lesser beauties that accompany me on those days get careful use and drying and maintenance after the hunt. I have bled many times protecting my stocks' finish from briars and multiflora rose thorns. So far those punctures and scratches have always healed. I reserve the right to change my opinion if I should contract a case of that flesh eating bacteria

And hey, I would like to think I am very similar to you guys. My nicer guns find themselves shooting at pheasants, doves, and occasional quail or chuckar, while my field grade guns are the tools that make it out into the waist deep marsh or the duck blind.

But what really change my opinion about having a nice gun in the safe is that my best friend who has been my hunting partner since I was a kid just had a heart attack last week (he is doing fine after having a stint put in). Then, one of my uncles who took me hunting when I was a kid just had a quadruple bypass and is not doing so well. He has aged so much. Finally, my turkey hunting friend just was diagnosed with cancer (he too is doing good).

As a result, I have come to the conclusion that "not only is life too short to drink bad wine," but for those of us who love to shoot and hunt, we could say the same about shooting cheap guns and hunting over a poorly trained dog.

Hence the new 578 in my collection and the 7 month old GSP sitting on my lap right now. .
