Both very fine looking sidelock guns sir-I have a 20 ga. Ideal-28" barrels my late Uncle bought new in 1936 for quail and dove hunting- I have used it for grouse and woodcock-we will most likely never see any hunt able numbers of quail here in MI-and never get a dove season. The early Smiths- wow what graceful lines were made in Syracuse NY- then later in Fulton NY (mine was made there by Hunter Arms-any changes either mechanically or in function between the early Syracuse and later Fulton mfg. guns? Thanks

After the Hunter Bros. bought out L.C. Smith in 1888 and started the Hunter Arms Co. in 1890 in Fulton, to cut down on expenses and some of the weight they did modify the receivers by doing away with the bottom receiver humps and the larger balls on the receiver. L.C. Smith made Grades 2-7, and Hunter Arms changed it to Grades 1-5. Plus L.C. Smith only made 10 & 12 ga. guns.

I'll agree with King that the L.C. 20s are some of the sweetest. Here's a picture of my 1909 00E 20. A nice original gun, not much make up, but a few don't need it.

John that is a nice looking 20 ga. Ideal. Is it the original straight hand stock- and I can't tell the forearm configuration from the foto- I have a 20 Ideal FW DT extractors 28" barrels a late relative bought for dove shooting (or shooting at- they fly very faaaast indeed don't they?) believe he bought it new in 1935 or 1936- it has the pistol grip stock (capped) and the std. black Bakelite buttplate-he always kept snap caps in it and let the hammers down-but cautioned me to always open and recock the gun before taking it down for cleaning or storage-
