Thoughts on putting Briley tubes on an English SxS 12 bore that is used as a field gun? Thanks

Assuming you mean subgauge tubes, the gun's balance will be thrown forward.

My 2c worth, it's your gun and if you want to tube it - go for it. As you said, it's a field gun to be used, not collected. I have both fixed and tubed SxS, I prefer fixed, but see nothing wrong with tubes. Sometimes they can add real versatility to the one or two gun owner. Thants MHO.

If you are talking about choke tubes and not sub ga. tube sets, I've put Briley Thin Walls in my Merkel 1620. It's great. I use the gun for SCs as well as upland bird hunting. Depending on the situation either at the range or the time of year in the field or different bird I'm hunting I can change the chokes in both barrels. Adds a lot of versatility to the SxS in my opinion.

Talking about sub gauge tubes not choke tubes

I had a set of full length 20 guage tubes for my 10 guage Purdey Hammer gun...they worked flawlessly. They did add some wieght but not much.

I plan on having a set of 20's made for my 12 guage Scott hammer gun.

A little weight up front might not to be bad. However sometimes the ejectors on the gauge tubes are not as large as the ejectors on the guns.

I use the 25" tubes in my guns and they work fine for all lenghts of barrels. For targets a Galco slip on pad helps even the weight out some

I know of a set of early full length 20 tubes in a 30" 12ga. Elsie and it is the proverbial 'pig on a shovel'. Not a pleasant gun to try and shoot, too much weight forward. Today, lighter tubes are available. Were it I, I would call Briley and give them the dimensions you are playing with and see if they can approximate the tubes' finished weight for you then I would insert that amount of weight in the bbls, perhaps a wrap of plumbers lead on small dia. wooden dowls or something similar and then practice mounting and swinging the gun to see if it still suits your intended useage & vision. If it does then go for it. I'd just try that first to avoid a disappontment since it will involve some expense once you have committed. Briley does good work.

Certainly, it is your choice. There are other approaches. You could use Chambermates or Gaugemates. They can cost less and will not impact the balance.
