20 ga with s/n dating it to 1935 marked "New Ithaca Field Grade" on right barrel, "Ithaca Gun Co, Ithaca, NY", twin ivories, What appears to be a Miller non-selective trigger in the rear position, ejectors, BT forend with Deely latch. Here's what throws me------ no stamps on the outside of the frame but light engraving around the perimeter of the frame, forend iron, and bottom plate. Serial number on the forend has an "S" prefix not appearing elsewhere on the gun. All numbers match, including forend wood and all are stamped "F".
My questions---1)is this a standard Field, as all other NID Fields I've seen have the bird dog on the frame instead of the border engraving, and ,2) could this gun, if a standard Field, been ordered with ivories, ejectors, BT, and a Miller trigger?
Sorry for the uninformed questions--- I'm an Elsie collector and have no reference material on Ithacas, although I've always admired them. BTW, S/N is 4619**.
Help---Walt or others !

I think you have a rare and valuable Skeet Model. Look on the barrels for the choke marking. If no numbered choke markings are visible, some Ithaca employee mistakenly marked the S on the forend when most skeet guns are marked with an S on the barrels. I hope Walt agrees with me. I just sold an identical rare and valuable 16 gauge Skeet Model that was marked S on the barrels. I'm sorry I sold it but I know where it is.

Laxcoach,
Sounds just right. If choked s/s, you must immediately sell it to me. I think it is a law someplace. Do you have my book?? The law also states that even if it is not choked s/s, you must sell it to me.

Walt, I wish I had your book---I wouldn't be pestering all with these questions. BTW, the chokes are 2 and 4 and measure M/F, 26" barrels stamped on the bottom LLH (I know what that means). I did fail to mention that the top of the frame is stippled, and the same border appears on the triggerguard in a rectangle, and appears as a border on the tang.
So, it's a Field Skeet?

None of the decorative elements (stippling, borders) distinguish your find from the latter-day NID grade 1. The mid-bead, bt, ejectors and the lazy "S" which somehow didn't get on the barrel flats certainly do. Good going!

The Field Grade NID went thru at least four variations during the period 1926 to 1948 ==

1926 version --

1928 to 1935 version --

1936 to WW-II version --

Post-War version, no engraving --

A NID Grade 1 had the bold floral engraving --

The post '35 to WWII with border tics, stippling would be field grade as in "New Ithaca Field Grade"? Duhuh. My apologies for mistakenly collapsing field and 1 into a single designation.
