Can anyone give me some info on a sidelocked hammer 12 bore- serial no. is 150161 and the only marking is on the left sideplate- stamped as follows H.S.B. & Co. CHICAGO- this is a w/o the barrels- so I don't know if they were twist-Damascus or fluid steel- or if there was any markings on the barrels or the top rib- sorry- wish I had more "detail" wondering if H.S.B. was the actual manufacturer in Chicogo IL- or was a hardware chain and had their initials stamped on the guns they sold-Thanks?? Hibbard, Spencer, and Bartlett

They were a big hardware dealer, the gun was probably made by Crescent.

Here is bit of history about HS&B:
http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/2700.html

Cornell carries a reprint of one the catalogs:
http://www.cornellpubs.com/Templates/Hibbard%201884.htm

They used Crescent, Folsom and various makers in Belgium. Consider them like a Sears in size and operation.

If any of you are ever in downtown Chicago go down to the lower level of Michigan Ave around the 400 North block where the train tracks go under the city. If you look on the building just before you enter the parking garage you'll see the Hibbard Spencer& Bartlett plaque which is still attached to the building.
I suspect this was their corporate headquarters many years ago.
BTW: Some of their guns were made up as "Hibspebars" and so marked.

Note from Drew's pic the Baker is a back action sidelock, but with a plate shape resembling a bar action, as is the L C Smith.
The Lefever Arms Co guns have a similar configuration to a Bar-ation sidelock, just the hammers are attached to the frame rather than sideplate. The mainspring rides in a channel in the bar but is totally "Unattached". Early models had the sears & their spring attaced to the sideplate, but later ones also attach these parts to frame. Technically they are thus boxlocks, but show no resemblance to the "Ordinary" Anson Deely action.
