Strength wise a lot of course depends upon the individual model. Generally speaking a back action SL, or trigger plate action has the potential of being strongest. A bar action SL is next & box locks weakest. In this aspect I would rate the Lefever as being equal to a bar action SL. The frame bar has essentially the same cross section & the hammer axle is well behind the stress zone. Unfortunately back-action SL's also have the most wood removed so often have weaker stocking, Smith's are notorious for this. Again I would rate the Lefever on a par with a bar action, while box locks have the potential of having the strongest stocks (all don't necessarily live up to it). Again generally speaking most (not all) US doubles are built heavier than British or Continental "Game Guns", thus stronger frames.
The hand-detachable sidelock simply has a turning lever formed as part of the head, so a screwdriver is unnecessary. This does away with buggered screw heads, but if one is not careful can lead to removing locks much more often than necessary. This also can be un-desirable as inletting is worn or even chipped. Personally I like an ordinary screw & a precisely fitted screwdriver & don't take the locks off needlessly.

Fox;
So far have never hit one of those "Sweepstakes" myself. Over the years I have owned a number of the representative US doubles & have always enjoyed studying the different features of them. Most of my guns have however been of the lower grades so am more versed on the mechanical aspects than engraving etc. The Lefever has become my all-time favorite as far as US guns go. I do have an English J P Clabrough 28" Damascus which I shoot as well or better than any gun I ever owned.
One thing many are unaware of is that although Lynchburg is the "Home" of Mr Jack, made & bottled right here the County itself (smallest in TN) is dry. Just recently laws have allowed sale of "Souvenier" bottles at "Souvenier Prices" at the distillery to visitors. Those who consume it have to buy it elsewhere.
I myself, living about 7 miles out in the boonies, when the breeze is just right can smell the mash working, am a total non-alcoholic. I drink coffee for breakfast & mostly water the rest of the day.
My "Go-To" gun for close to 40 yrs now has been an FE grade Lefever, 2-triggered with ejectors, which I purchased at, of all places at a local Western Auto store, where the propietor did a little gun-trading on the side. Before gas got so ridiculus & I could afford to drive to gun shows etc, I learned to watch for those side plated guns with the cocking indicators protruding, could spot them a mile away so to speak. Was not uncommon to go to a show & look at 3 dozen Smith's, Fox's etc a couple dozen Parkers & "One" Lefever. Now that their price is going up some a few more seem to be coming out of the woodwork, but I still don't think you will find many concentrations of them, they are simply "Wherever you can Find One". It is gennerally conceded that no more than about 60,000 of them were built, which while not "Rare" is certainly not as common as most of the other US classics.

A friend and I went to visit the son of R.G. Owen awhile back. He showed us a 20 gauge his father had built for him when he was, I believe, 13 years old. We were shouldering it and commention how nice it came up. He chuckled and said that one of the members of the Winous Point Club had commented, when handing it years ago, that "It was like touching a woman".

He'd met Capt. Curtis as a boy and had a signed copy of his book. He'd also met H.P. Sheldon and several of the other "big guns" from back in the day. It was quite a visit hearing all those stories I can assure you.

Fox;
My dad used to have an old two-horse, one row walking corn/cotton cultivator made by the Parker corporation. I would have to dig it out of the weeds to see for sure, may have been Parker, Snow just don't recall for sure. Some years ago I spent quite a few hours in the seat of one of those old hand-clutching two cylinder "Poppin-Johnies". Had a 68 JD 112 lawn mower I was cuttting my grass with till not too many years ago & got it on two steep a slope & the oil slinger on the connecting rod got out of the oil & I locked up the engine. Kept meaning to fix it, but went to using another instead. I have a copy of an old Rifleman article by Capt Curtis which Ithaca sent me about 40 years ago. He concluded in this article that Lefever did build America's "First Hammerless Double", but Sneider built the first self cocker.
