I forgot to include that brother William was an engraver according to the Meriden City directory of 1890.

Here is a snippet of the 1880 census, showing Albert living at home. I can not decipher his occupation apart from "factory". If anyone can make this out, please let us know.



I am working at getting more information about Santa Clara. Was Albert self employed or working for some one? I believe I have found an Aubrey family historian, we will see. I know some of the family is still around.

I think it was either Joe Vorisek or Larry Schucknecht who interpreted that as "work gun factory" and made the leap of faith that Albert was working at Parker Bros.

The D stands for Damascus. They used S-steel, T-twist and D-damascus. Without pictures, it is hard to say how unique it is. Number 1,000 has the most unique engraving of any Aubrey that has surfaced so far. You say yours has Star Damascus, 6 iron, which makes it rather unique. A trap gun would certainly be something! Please post some pictures when you can.

I don't see "gun" as the second word. Look at the "g" in clergyman. I will accept it until some one can read that scribble. There were a lot of factories in Meriden at the time. They were producing glass, flatware and any number of other items. What fun would it be if we had all the records from all the makers?

I had been told that the D meant Grade D and read that this was a Trap/pigeon gun.

I think the entry for Albert's vocation on the census is 'work layr Factory'. A quick, shorthand notation for 'worker, laborer, factory'. JMH guess.....
