I bought a guild rifle, no maker's name, at an auction a few weeks ago. Made a chamber cast but the closest that I can come up with is the 8x56MS. I happen to have a model 1908 and ammo so I tried to chamber a fired case. It went right in. So I loaded it up with 15 grains of 4198 and dacron with wax to seal the case. Everything measures the same as other cases fired in the MS. Only part that bothers me is the primer backed out about halfway. Any and all advice welcome. I can always ignore it. lol

What is the diameter of the bore? For one you are shooting what looks to be a rimless in a Rand(Rimmed) chamber. It looks a lot like 8X57IR/IRS? Any dimensions in the comparison to 8X57IR/IRS? Is there a bullet weight stamped on the barrel?

no marking for caliber at all. .322 bore. The only marking on it.

Hum, that Boxy Imperial Eagle is similar to that of an early Sauer process mark but here would be a touchmark of the Arsenal Gewehrfabrik - Erfurt(GwF. E.)?

Mike,
Your rifle is likely chambered for 8x57IS. When you fired the 8x56MS fireforming load, the pressure was low enough that it didn't push the case back onto the primer. While there was likely a little excess headspace, even without it primers often protrude, giving the impression of excess headspace when low pressure loads are fired. My opinion is based on the fact that the rifle is a mod.98 Mauser and you identified the barrel as having .322" groove diameter. You can verify the caliber by firing an 8x57IS cartridge then checking if a .323" bullet will easily fit into the unsized fired case. Raimey's ID of the maker is correct.

I think that the Erfurt Arsenal made an attempt at the end of WWI to peddle Commercial hunting rifles based on the small ring 98AZ actions in an effort to keep their mechanics gainfully employed for bread & milk money after the Great War. So in 1918 the >>Königliche Gewehrfabrik Erfurt(1918-1919)<< was renamed >>Reichswerke Erfurt(1919-1921)<< and the accompanying mark was Rw.E. Then in 1921 the Erfurt Arsenal experienced another name change to >>Deutsche Werke Erfurt(1921-1922)<< and the Treaty of Versailles put an end to it all in 1922. The Danzig Arsenal experienced the same demise & the equipment was boxed & carted off to Poland. All the examples I have viewed were originally chambered for the ole 8X57IS. These were not conversions but True, Blue Hunting rifles based on the carbine action. Most were for export as few if any Germans had the extra Pfennig to spare for a rifle.

Cheers,
