Hello everyone. We inherited a lot of guns from my uncle who passed away October 31st, 2009. All these guns are way out of our range for what we want.

Anyhow, we have this Purdy SxS 12 Gauge. A professional told us that it was made in 1893 (around that, I can't remember exact). Basically, we're not sure to trust or distrust this guy. Basically, he told us if the Purdy has a "damascus" barrel it's worth more. He told us also that if the barrel has been redone by Purdy themselves, then it's worth more money. Otherwise the value will be dropped.

Does anyone know how to tell? He didn't tell us, and said he had to look at it. We don't want him to tell us it's worth a lower amount, when it's worth more. That's what I'm afraid of.

I can post more pictures, but here is the Purdy:

Here are a couple of Winchester's we inherited:
Model 21:

The gun list:
http://jeep.sidrahq.com/guns/list/guns.html under "picture" is the last 3 digits of the file name on http://jeep.sidrahq.com/guns/list/

As you can see from the Purdy it's numbers are 63, 64, 66 so press ctrl+f search for "066" "063", etc. For lists larger then 99, do not include zero.

He told us the Model 12 is not worth more then $3000-$3500. And he told us the Model 21 is only worth money if Winchester engraved it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated =)
In regards to the Purdey, should be easy to tell. If you post a picture of the proof marks (bottom of barrel where it joins up with the action of the gun) and the barrels themselves, should be an easy question to answer. It appears to be a very fine gun.
Purdey will email you the information on the gun for about $90. They have tremendously detailed and complete records. I have a gun that they made in the 1830s. They gave me the original confifguration, who it was sold too. Additonally someone sent it back to Purdeys and had it converted to a breechloader in the 1870s. They had the records for that also.

They will send you an email and then a letter.

Best,

Mike
I would contact Purdey with the serial number for information on the gun. If rebarrled by Purdey they will tell you the guns history. I would have a person who knows British shotguns evaluate your Purdey.
As to the Model 21 and Model 12. The Model 21 is an early Model and its probably done by the person that did the Model 12 work, if it is Paul Yeager as you indicate. Your going to have to find a Paul Yaeger fan to sell those guns.-Dick
Ok I have no dog in the fight here, and certainly not the funds... but are these guns going to be for sale? If so where will they be sold.
Maack,
You should tell what atae you're in; then one of the members can give you the name of a reputable person to value your guns. I wouldn't pat too much more attention to the guy who has been throwing out prices to you. You require an expert in the field; it will be worth any money you might have to pay him.
Oh, and Purdey is spelled with an "e". that's the extent of my know-how on them.
good luck.
If your gun was indeed built in 1893 it likely had Whitworth steel barrels as Purdey was one of the earliest makers to promote steel.
Your "professional" is already off base with his comments.
Be careful!!! . As mentioned above , the proof marks, under the barrels, will tell most of the story.
I might be interested in the AYA 117 if its for sale. If it is available for purchase, please email me at dstinson@sw.rr.com

Thanks!

Adam
We sold the Aya and a few others! Sorry!

The guy that is the "gun" expert told us not to tell anyone about the guns because it would "lower" the value of the gun if a lot of people knew about it. What do you guys think about that statement?

More people = more $. Is he trying to rip us off?
Yes. He wants them for himself and is giving you very self serving advice. Either that--or you are in some backward bizarro world where black is white, up is down....

again - where are you located? someone here will undoubtedly give you a reputable name nearby to check out you guns.
if you find the thread on "Cowboy's HE Fox" you'll see what I mean. within hours of posting, the guy got a ton of good advice and a hookup with Steven Dodd Hughes, as reputable a source as you'll find anywhere.
And avoid your "expert" like the plague. anyone who tells you to limit your advertising is, at best, giving you bad advice.
If you haven't, you should probably look at some gun sites like http://www.gunbroker.com or http://www.gunsinternational.com
This will give you ideas of what others are selling their guns for. I am certainly no expert, but you have some beautiful guns and should take your time in selling them if that's what you want to do with them.

Lots of Luck

This expert's name wouldn't be Wilson, would it?

Keep this joker at arm's length. Your best bet is to find a reputable dealer of higher end guns near to you. They may offer to purchase outright or be willing to sell on consignment. The other alternative is an auction house that has the appropriate clientele. Others here should be able to help with finding either.

Pete
Thanks guys. Yes, I knew what this guy said was insane.

We're located in Delaware, technically they are my dad's guns and I'm helping him. He is on a cruise right now so I really can't do too much until he's back on Monday.

Maack, if you are looking to sell these guns you might consider one of the big auction houses like James Julia or Rock Island.

Regards,

Max
Hey Max, James Julia actually gave us a lot of issues. They told us none of our guns were worth our time, then turned around and said they wanted to send a guy to our house to look at them. We told them no thanks.
Boy what I wouldn't give to wrap my hands around that Purdey....

Alas a working sap like me can't afford such things, thanks a million for letting me/us view them, if you could hook up with one of the more knowledgable members here in your area, you'd be miles ahead. If I lived anywhere near Delaware I'd give you a hand-gladly just to expirience those guns. I would give RIA a call I have been to their auctions several times and they do a great business. For the type of guns you have they would most likely be happy to fly to you for the opportunity to sell them.

Good luck and keep us all posted..
MaacK,Thats a nice looking"Well Traveled 1890s PURDEY. I'm sure someone will soon mention that the stock has had a "Cod" fitted to the Straight-Hand stock, converting it into a "Pistol-Grip". They can be made as a "Temporary" that can be removed puting it back to a Straight-Hand stock, or made to be a permanent fixture as I think your gun is. I am sure that you will have a potential "Punter" Knock Down the Value somewhat over the "Pistol-Grip"! If you want to have a Minor Heart Attack' ask David Maynard(PURDEYS longest serving employee at the "Front-Shop") the Cost or Restocking Your Nice Old Side-Lock! Regards,...Purdeys Oldest Living Stockmaker(In America).Crossed Chisles'.
No problem, crossedchisles. They are indeed a pleasure to own. I was told by Purdey themselves this information:

I have looked the 12 bore Purdey hammerless
self opening ejector gun no.16510 in our records & have found the following
information:
Completed in 1899 for W. H. Bass.
This gun was made to match Purdey gun no.15789 which was made For Mr W. H. Bass in 1896.
29" barrels, 2 1/2" chambers later made 2 5/8", chokes right cylinder left modified choke.
Original stock length 14 3/8" mid.
Original weight of gun 6lb 8oz.
MaacK,Good to see JP' gave you a reply with Orig. Info. Are the Barrels engraved on the Top-Rib Sir Joe' Whitworth Steel ?It should show the London Re-Proof stanp on the Barrel-Flats for the Lenghthening of the Chambers by Purdey.(A Script letter "R"). Not advisable to shoot "Hi brass cartridges".Use Care with the 111 Yr old 6.1/2Lb"Classic". dt "Crossed Chisles"
I'm not sure. My father is on a cruise and won't be home until Monday, and I don't know how to open the safe (it's a antique too, hehe)..
We're looking to sell this gun, are their any kind of Purdey gun collectors?
Maack...RUN do not walk from that individual that you are getting "advice" from re. sale of your Uncles firearms. You can also place the firearms on consignment with number of reputable dealers. A good place to look for asking prices on collectable and other guns is gunsinternational.com Good Luck! Jeff S.
I have had a good consignment experience with George Caswell at Champlin Firearms. I have also purchased guns from him. A friend of mine consigned several guns to George for an estate and had a good experience. I recommnend George.

I have purchased guns from Kirby Hoyt at Vintage Doubles and would recommend him based on that experience.

Best,

Mike
MaacK,

Please contact me. I left a PM several days ago, but they often do not go through. I am interested in one or two of the guns on your list.

Thanks everyone. I don't receive e-mail alerts from this forum, and I been flooded with work (webdeveloper) lately and trying to get things done. My work time is pretty much 9AM to 4AM for the past 2 weeks. I can barely keep my eyes open so I'm taking a break today.
