Hear ye! Hear ye! A new world record was set at the Vintage Cup for high swing effort (MOI). The new champ is a single barrel box lock 4 bore of 1960-70ism Italian manufacture. Said cannon has an 8# 13oz barrel, 1# 5oz forearm, and a 6# 10oz stock and reciever for a nice round total weight of 16# 12oz. The barrel is 47 1/4", LOP is 14 3/4", and balance is 10 7/8" in front of the trigger. The MOI machine took a stately 18.75 seconds for one full rotation, a number off my chart and requiring calculation with the curve formula. The unmounted swing effort (10 X MOI at CG) was --- drum roll --- 7.65 (average game gun is 1.45 and previous champ was a Purdey Jones underlever double 8 bore damascus at 4.9). The mounted swing effort was 31.33, displacing the previous champ's (a new manufacture Westley-Richards double 8 bore) 17.43.
The owner plans to assemble loads and fire the beast. I'm guessing a fairly hit clay will vanish much in the manner of Bilbo Baggins.
DOUBLE the effort?!!?!?
Perfect trap gun:)
Thank you for sharing.

Don, I didn't see that four bore single. Was it offered for sale? I think I may need such a gun.

I wish I had known about the competion. Had my P Mullin 4 Ga
single 48 in Barrell 20lb 4 oz in the back of my Gunmobile,
Wonder how she would have done?

That picture looks a lot like a Wood Duck roost shoot happening, er/uhh so I've been told...Geo
Drew/Geo - that picture is actually of Alan Myers shooting a shoulder 2 bore
(not a 4 bore) with a huge black powder load. Alan is a well-known big-bore specialist here in the UK and undertakes commissions for such beasts.
Thank you CBL, I corrected my caption on the PictureTrail album
8B, not offered for sale, just shown around for talking --- a purpose which it served well!! I think the owner wants to shoot it some for the experience.
Well, sir, let us keep spinning yours in mind for the next time we are in the same place at the same time. It wasn't an actual competition; I just keep track of the envelope for so-called shoulder arms.
Frankly, I'm curious as to just how big an arm has been made and still called a shoulder gun.

I have been known to frequent the Southern, but not yet the Louisville show. We can stay in touch and likely meet at one or touther. I now expect ye 'ole MOI machine will give us accurate reedings on your gun.
Well, I hope he was pointing that thing towards the Atlantic, because if he was poitning that thing towards Europe they are going to get some shot raining down on top of them...
Absolutely unreal!!!!
Don, thanks for replying about the modern four bore. I'm sorry I missed it.
George....at close range , I think it would be Wood Duck ROASTING,
like those old Benny Hill shows, with him firing a flaming arrow & a nice hot meal falls to ground
Franc
Franc! Your showing your age with the Benny Hill comment, but so am I since I laughed at it!
I'll speak to owner of said "shoulder cannon", to see if he'll have gun and shells ready for the Fall Shoot this month at Rick Hemmingways. I'll also see if I cannot get over and get a photo. I have a 3.5 lb .410 single I'll take for side by side comparison.
Joe
Good to know that the modern conscientious sportsman would prefer the vintage shoulder mounted weapon when hosing a roost. The very thot of some automatic contrivance being used in such a noble endeavor simply chills the blood.
I'm sure any 200bird/shot punt gunner would instantly identify and appreciate the adherence to tradition.

Hehehe, I've got some of Benny Hill's shows on video, he was an absolute riot. An English version of Laugh In.
Anything hit by that 2 bore would be lucky to fall to the ground cooked rather than being vaporized.
Drew/Eugene, Ray Poudrier has requested to use your photo in the Vinteger's Newsleter. Yea or Nay?
Gents - there is another picture taken of Alan Myers and that 2 bore closer up which you may wish to source. I believe Destry (Markethunter) may have a copy as he knows Alan so this could develop any picture article further.
I wore a Black Arm Band the day I heard old Benny had died

Loved the wee Belfast slap on the head dude too!
no more on this off the thread...sorry.

Don: I'm sorry for the delay in responding but just returned from Mexico
Really
I think I harvested that picture from the ShotgunWorld site, posted by Eugene, but assume it's under public domain.
Thanks, Drew. I'll pass it on to 'ole Ray.
