A friend showed me an old SxS today, and I would appreciate any info or value estimates. It had been handed down from a grandfather, now deceased. I didn't have my camera with me at the time.

It is a sidelock hammer double, probably from about 1880? The only brand name is "AMERICAN GUN CO., NEW YORK. I think it is a 16 gauge, but didn't have a gauge or shells handy, to confirm. Barrels appear to be steel, not twist, and shiny inside. Condition is surprisingly good for a century old shotgun. No finish or case color, but no rust or pitts. Walnut wood is solid, but finish has flaked badly -- looks like old shellac. No checkering.

I hadn't heard of this maker before. Perhaps it is just a "trade name"?

Action has a bit of looseness, but less than I expected for its age. It appears shootable.

All comments and opinions welcomed.

Jerry: Ned Fall frequents the Shotgunworld.com ID and Value site, and has a rough estimate of DOM based on Joe Vorisek's research if you know the SN. As it is marked American Gun Co. New York it was probably made 1904-1915
