I have just acquired a single barrel 28 gauge shotgun which was made for W Rawbone of Cape Town. I have tried looking for similar guns on the Web but cannot find any. I was just wanting for information about this gun. Who might of made it, how old etc. Not sure how to add a photo as this may help?

Photos are a necessity. Include pics of any marks anywhere on the gun.

To upload pictures.

Have the BBS window open with the post you'd like to put the pic into.

Open up jpgbox "submit an image" in another window. Click on "choose file", the screen will switch to your photo library. Click on the pic you want to upload.

The screen will change back, the pic address will show where the
"choose file" box was. At the bottom, click "upload photo", the screen will change and your pic will appear. Now, I always go to the picture sizes and click on the largest size. The screen will change again.

To post your pic, go to the box labeled " for forums" and copy and paste this info right into the BBS box you have open in the other window. That's it.

The name Rawbone of Cape Town struck a chord with me, just couldn't remember where at first. Finally I remembered, many many years ago I saw a 4 gauge double muzzleloading rifle with that name on it. I don't recall any details about it now but that name Rawbone just sort of stuck in my memory.
Turner Kirkland of Dixie Gunworks had it, has been around 45 years ago that I saw it. I seem to recall he carried it on Safari & shot an Elephant with it.

Here are a few photos. Rawbone

I hope this works, seems very complicated, not sure why you can't just upload straight from your device?

The Rawbone name is owned by Terry Harrison, formerly of City Guns in Cape Town. Believe Terry has Rawbone records. Try to email mharri@mweb.co.za If that does not work, perhaps being the email of Terry's late brother, Mark, PM me and I'll pass along a phone number.

Regards

Let me try to help. the basic format for something/someplace on the web is an address that begins http:// followed by the rest of the address ( http://tntfiles.com/08ii752pjn/dsc-0095.jpg ). it must be complete syntax and not duplicated as per your initial try.

The forum tag code works in matched pairs with a Begin Tag [...] and an End Tag [/...] the object or text that is controlled by those tags sits between them.
The begin and end image tags [img] ...........{/img] with that same web address in between is the normal way to embed them but the address code given on your web hosted pictures is a bit odd. I will copy and paste the forum display code that they provide. It seems to display a thumbnail image that will open a new window with the larger one when you click on it like this........

to try the normal way; go to the display of the image on your picture hosting site. Hover the mouse over the image there, right click and choose "copy image location" from the drop down menu. Then paste that into the image tags [img}..here...[/img].

you can do that paste image tag manually or click on the "enter an image" button from the top of the forum editor box to have the software create the tags for you.

Thanks Lees, I've learnt something. And will try again.

It's always good to learn something useful without applying for a Darwin award wink

The right click & copy xxx location is a basic way of finding out the actual address of an image, file or other site. Individual computers/hosts may also have some helper utilities/functions/buttons to assist you with that.

You can also use that drop down list to display the underlying image, which may be bigger or higher quality than what is available otherwise. Handy trick to get a better view of many things like eBay images, etc.

As to why you can't just drag/drop/load files on your computer's desktop to this forum: That would require the forum/site owner to install/maintain additional complex code and pay a great deal more to store/manage all the server space needed to store those images/files. The sites that usually allow you to do that charge you to offset that cost. If they don't charge you directly as cost of software or subscription they are doing a google/amazon/Microsoft/apple sort of thing using/selling your info for profit indirectly &/or having businesses pay for advertising/sponsorship.

Dave, who owns/runs this site provides our "free" use of it paid by donations and some advertising/sponsor revenue. he does that without collecting/selling your personal info.

Ambleside'
Rawbone's business and family history is complex! Records show that he was Born in London and emigrated to Cape Town, South Africa in 1848,
From 1860-1870 records show that he returned to Birmingham,England were he established a gun making business.
Shortly following 1873-1877 he is residing in and ran a gun making business in Toronto, Canada. Records state that his sons operated the business units in Canada and South Africa till circa 1900.
The Feb; 11-17 1982 edition of the Shooting times, contains an article by the late Geoffrey Boothroyd covering a very fine Rawbone Hammer gun with the Toronto address, serial #2058,wich suggests a manufacturing date in the 1873-1877 time frame.

A nice Rawbone 10 bore appeared at a recent Julia's auction. Julia Rawbone

Thanks for the info Roy. The barrel says "made for W.Rawbone",so looks like it was made by someone else, probably in Birmingham.
The Julia Rawbone above is a beautiful gun, and was made by Westley Richards, so there could be a possibility that so was mine. But we will never know as there are no other marks on the gun except for Birmingham proof marks and the number 818 on the barrel and action. I will try to post more pictures, but getting this right seems to be eluding me.

Final bit of bling is to surround each web address/URL (i.e. https://www.........JPG ) with beginning Image tag/bracket [img] and ending Image tag/bracket [/img] to display it embedded here. you can edit your post & add the begin/end img tags around each individual URL. You should be able to see the results as you are working on them with the preview button before submitting the change. You will also want to hit enter/new-line before &/or after each image to keep them in a tidy scrollable list.
