Posted By: Chukarman 2-1/2" load data? - 03/29/18 08:56 PM
I would like to use some of my WWAA (CF)12 Gauge hulls to roll up some 2-1/2" one ounce loads for my Atkin. I usually use WSF or 7625 - which I have here now. I am having trouble finding much of any data. Hodgdon has a few loads for Universal, but that's all I have found.

I know there must be some load data on here, but I cannot find it.

Any help is appreciated.

Chukarman,

I use RST 12 gauge 2 1/2" plastic hulls to load 1/2 and 3/4 ounce lead loads for my H&H Hammergun that has 2 1/2" chambers.

I didn't think I could get consistent results starting out with 2 3/4" hulls so I didn't even try.

I managed to get an adequate supply of RST's hulls at the Northeast shoot at Hausmann's in PA in June and from guys that I shoot with.

I use those RST 2 1/2" hulls, CB6100-12 wads and Alliant Extra Lite powder and Winchester 209 primers.

More detail, for my 1/2 ounce loads, I use 14.0 grains of XL powder, a 1/8 inch thick card wad in the bottom of the CB6100 wad and a 6 point crimp on my MEC Sizemaster loader.

For 3/4 ounce loads, 14.3 grains of XL, nothing in the bottom of the CD wad.

I put a 1/4" spacer under the shell for the crimp starter and crimp station on my MEC.

The shells load and crimp fine and are a delight to shoot. They have been tested and produce 5000 - 6000 psi and about 1300 FPS.

If you want to try some of these, I would be happy to send you some of those hulls and wads to try. Just pay postage.

I hope this helps some.

Chukarman,

Just a note or two to add to my above Reply.

Those 2 1/2" RST hulls and the CB6100-12 could be used to load a little heavier load with a different powder. Should be enough room. 6 point crimp.

And I did load some 2 3/4" hulls cut to 2 1/2" and used a Hardin Shot Shell crimp. If you go to the Reloading section of shotgunworld.com you show find more detail.

There's enough of the 8 point crimp left to crimp the shell nicely but you have to use an over shot card on top of the shot.

I tried to post a picture of what the end of the shell looked like but I couldn't figure out how to do it.

This link might do it:

You can use data for the 2 3/4 shell when loading for the 2 1/2" shell. All you'll have to change is the wad. You didn't say what wad you're using. I use Clay Busters and sub in CB- 1138 wad [ WWA12R ] meant for 1 3/8oz of shot - it has a shorter cushion to give the room you need for a good crimp.

Paul -- I have at least one bag of WW12R red wads left over from when I could shoot lead at ducks!

I hope that I don't need to trim the petals.

Thanks for your help.

Also, see the Hodgdon site. Click on the "Resources" drop down and click on "Reloading Data Center", then choose "Shotgun" and then from a few 2 1/2" (or 2") loads. Not a lot of variety.

Chuck, thanks. Hodgdon's has four 2-1/2" loads, all for WW12AA hulls and Unique powder. I didn't see anything else there.

Those loads use universal. Unique is Alliant powder.

OOOOPS. I knew that it started with a 'U'. Thanks for correcting the record.

The petals will fold over with the crimp.

I contacted Ballistic Products and bought some of their Super Spark wads. I'm making 3/4 ounce target loads using either their Cheddite hulls or recycled RST shells. As I recall, they have recipes using from 20-22 grains of Universal Clays.

Well, thanks to all who responded. Last night my friend and hunting partner called me and said, "I think you recently bought an English gun, right? Well, I have 250 Federal paper hulls that I have trimmed to 2-1/2", and a bunch of overshot cards. Could you use them?"

Ahhh, yes!
