G&S Holloway. No comparison with the beauties posted above, but the best I got to offer...Geo

Nothing close to being as spectacular as the others but not bad for a pre war Russian gun in original finish.

This is an off the rack 16 ga. L.C. Smith 0 grade circa 1910. One of the previous owners put his name in the lower left corner of the stock, who am I to take it off.

George, The wood on your gun looks like the French walnut they had 100 years ago (before the Germans took over in France destroying the old trees). That stock is really fabulous imho.

This wood on my Alexander Henry double .577 2-3/4" BPE is about as good as it gets. The rifle was completed October 14, 1890.

I'm kinda pleased with it. Gun was stocked in France about 1920 so I'm guessing it was some of that 100 yo, pre German forest destruction, French walnut Buzz was mentioning.

Not a bad chunk of kindling for a 200 year old double flinter, London made.

Hey dUmbAss,
In your first sentence you point out how I keep price tags on my guns.
In your second sentence you accuse me of stealing the pictures.

homelessjOe (aka Frank Cox) is an moron.
He is unable to follow his own train of thought from one sentence to the next.

homelessjOe (aka Frank Cox) is a coward.
He hides behind his keyboard knowing full well that if he spoke the filth he spews
while standing toe to toe with a man he'd get his monkeybOy neck snapped.

homelessjOe (aka Frank Cox) is a liar.
He accuses a man of stealing without any knowledge or proof.
Bearing false witness I think it's called.

How about a wager Frank Cox?
Let's bet I can prove the above referenced photo and gun are mine.

Because now we just go in this vicious circle, but the problem is the more you go round and round, the more people see your hypocrisy. Who can take you serious when you keep showing this level of unawareness, you may think you appear righteous, but thats only how you perceive yourself, to the rest of us you look like a fool.

If you feel that way, that's fine. If I think you are a sucker for falling for Frank's crap and the rest of it, and the paying for it to boot. That's fine too.

So, around and around we go. Hold on.

RARiddell,

My father used to say,
"You can tell a lot about a man by the company he keeps".
Your allegiances on this board speak volumes.
My father used to say,
"When a man leaves this world, the only thing he takes with him is his good name".
You may be the type of man to allow a cowardly liar (Frank Cox) to besmirch your name,
Me, not so much.
I've uttered no cries in any of my posts, only a challenge to a liar.

RARiddell,

Perhaps you'd like to accept my wager in Frank Cox's stead?

Back to wood:

About the best I’ve got. Not the show piece that some guys have on their guns, but, I selected it, with input from the maker on the requirements of what I wanted on the gun. I told him I wanted a little thinner wrist than is typical, an idea he was a bit dubious about, but, he didn’t own a pair of gloves, and it is -30 here, today.
He said this piece was the best in the shop for strength, beauty, age, and stability.
It was built to fit me, cast to fit me, and had the configuration and sling that I wanted put on. Then, the restocked gun went in a case, and came home from France with me.

It didn’t seem like a big deal at the time, but, I came to understand just how hard it was for anyone to pull that off, years after I did it. I was very lucky to have been in a place to do so.

Best,
Ted

Guess some of them are rather plain. I would rather have plain without trouble than fancy with issues.

Nothing like mother nature...Ted the wood looks pretty nice on both the stock on the Darne almost has some fish belly behind the grip.

“Galwi”. Pronounced “galbi” in France, sometimes called perch belly here in the states. You will see it on Belgian guns from time to time.

Exactly what I wanted. I’ve used that gun to great effect for grouse hunting for thirty one years, and three Setters. Taken a few pheasants with it, as well.

Fish was as close as I could get...
Posted By: Konor3inch Re: Lets see some wood! - 01/30/19 11:42 PM
Roach belly is a term sometimes used here in UK for the same stock configuration
Posted By: gunsaholic Re: Lets see some wood! - 01/30/19 11:43 PM
Now I know what term you use when referring to those stocks. I have a Simson over/under with the perch belly.

Ted, re:
"“Galwi”. Pronounced “galbi” in France, sometimes called perch belly here in the states."
"Galbée", actually, as in "crosse galbée". Pronounced sort of like "galbay".
It is seen most often and in the most acute ways on Belgian guns.

The gunmaker who did the stock gave me that spelling. But, he lived in Montreal for a few years, and may have been corrupted.

Ted
