I know, I know could have been anyone under the sun in Wolverton, Birmingham or London. But there is always someone out there that might have an idea. It's from an 1888 James Lang sidelock. Very simple design, but the main spring has a roller instead of a hook at the end.

Just a very basic lock fitted to any number of low grade guns.

Interesting sear engagement, more acute angle than in sidelocks, closer to boxlock layout. Probably to counter the lack of intercepting safety sear. Simple but definitely not crude.

Gunman hit the nail on the head, as usual. Simple, low grade, back action trade lock probably manufactured in house by Tolley (1879 patent action) in Birmingham for sale to the trade. “Duck bill” style locks were seen as a cheap, out of fashion and not pleasing to the eye. Low grade does NOT mean low quality. The quality is still there...

Yep. Things were moving pretty rapidly by then. Scott & Baker patent action was pretty much taking over by then....and during that time frame..a flurry of action patents & ideas were blowing up the trade.
