This percussion buscheflinte is by Janeck. 28/.57. Only saw one
reference to Janeck and it was a pistol.
Were there many makers in Dresden? Any other Janeck's known?

No Hal, I haven't unearthed any additional info but then again I haven't really been looking. I have not seen a Janeck listed in Germany post the percussion period.

Thanks. Was nice to see my old post about this maker again and the old listing in Christies. Perhaps the German Gun Collector's Society might have found some other examples from that beleaguered city.
I doubt it, but they might. After the Brits put a torch to it, I just don't know if much ancient info was preserved. You might have someone thumb thru a copy of Heer Der Neue Stöckel?

But again, I have not seen an Janeck gunmakers in Germany during the Golden Age of Gunmaking. Perhaps they migrated to Bohemia?

On an off chance, I would check w/ Mr. Larry Schuknecht thru Dietrich Apel's old email address:

info@germanhuntingguns.com

He, if anyone, would have a lead.

Raimey, Hal,
Took a quick peak thru Stockel without seeing any info on Janeck. I also took a look in vol 3 under the city of Dresden. Pg 1851 lists approx 150 names but does not include Janeck. Also took a look at DGJ index & reader without mention on Janeck.

During the 1844...46 period gunmaker Christian Daniel Janeck made a claim against a court opera singer for the sum of 50 thaler and an English cylinder clock worth of 30 thaler unpaid towards a double rifle: https://www.deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de/item/CYP2BNUFUU5YT222SJNELAEGRYLM22BR

In 1831 gunmaker Christian Daniel Janeck listed as residing at Reitbahngasse (Seevst.) 451 and in 1868 at Feldgasse 10; Both in Dresden: adressbuecher.genealogy.net/addressbooks/place/DREDENJO61UB?offset=175&start=J&max=25

Many thanks Hart & Markus. Interesting that there was a Büchsenmacher named Janeck from the 1830s till say 1870 and that he really doesn't make any major lists? It may be that the Janeck outlet in Dresden was a satellite of one in the Austro-Hungarian Empire / Bohemia?

I was thinking of František Karel Janecek(probably father & sohn) of Prague - Nusle, Czechoslovakia who holds U.S. of A. Patent US2315207A.

. Büchsenmacher. Janeck, Dippoldiswaldaerg.....

I wonder who this cat was?

>>Its so nice and light weight and very well made that I must try it. Its by a maker in Dresden named Janeck. I don't want to pound it hard, so will "proof" the rifle barrel with about 80 gr ffG and a 420 gr Minie and then find a load with less powder and hopefully good enough accuracy at 50m to bag a deer. I will try and find Minies of different weights to try. The rifle barrel has "Pr" or "Pv" over "47" and I wonder if that dates the barrel? Likely not, as I read that vented nipples, that this gun has, were obsolete by 1830.<<

Hal did you post this in 2005 & can you pleasure us w/ a few images of the touchmarks you note?

mentions a percussion double with a lock signature "J.Janeck in Dresden"

Markus
Too, I was thinking of Zbrane Jirkovský a Janecek(Weapons Jirkovsky & Janecek of Prague) but this is a recent concern.

What might >>Rundläufe<< translate to in our English weapons vernacular?

AFAIK regular round barrels. Maybe auction listings include descriptions that are not strictly necessary.

Markus
Lot 131 here a Janeck percussion rifle

Ah, I thumbed thru a few makers & found the following in Dresden:

Karl Gründig - 1867
Hofbüchsenmacher Sr. Majestät des Königs Friedrich August von Sachsen.
Dresden, Gewandhaußtraße

Gebrüder Kupfer, Büchsenmacher
Head of Guild
Früherer Inhaber: Engelbert Heinze
Gegründet 1867
Walter Kupfer or his brother had a satellite office in Prag

Carl Friedrich Ulbricht - circa 1845
Gustav Richard Ulbricht Königl. Hofbüchsenmacher
Dresden - N., Kasernenstraße 23

Since it is only say 50 km to the CZ border and since Gebrüder Kupfer had a satellite office in Prag, I still think the possibility exists that the family of Janeck did the same but in reverse? I looked for a Dresden successor to Janeck but for now have not seen one.

Here are Dresdner Büchsenmacher results from genealogy.net:

Markus
Interesting list and from which I could only find info on the following:

Friedrich - Dresden

Moritz August Friese - Dresden - Büchsenmacherei.

A.F. Meyer - Dresden

L.W. Müller - Dresden

Thanks for all the research folks. Yes Ellenbr I will try to get some better photos of the touchmarks and post soon.

Hal
Three more pics including the touchmarks. Neat the way they have a raised bar forward of the vents that rest on the locks. Gold front bead and rear sight, gold inlayed rings on the barrels, and gold inlaid ovals with maker's name on both locks.

I ended up shooting a whitetail with it. Had a .58 R.E.A.L. in rifled barrel and .577 roundball in the 28 bore. Too bad stock is a replacement. Would have been nice to see the ornate carving and the fancy patchbox that I know was there because of the cutout in the buttplate.
Whole lotta Dresden 1685-1879 Janecks at

10th from top here a Christian Daniel Janeck related to Christian Daniel:

https://www.ancestry.com/search/collecti...0OTs1MA-61--61-

Wonder if there were two gunmakers (father and son?) of the same name.

Markus
Does it list their occupation? I would say so then?

>>Julius Richard Janeck<<

I now wonder if the J of >>J. Janeck<< seen on Janeck in Dresden sporting wares is that of Julius Richard Janeck & he was the brother of Christian Daniel Janeck, Sr. and uncle of Christian Daniel Janeck, Jr.? Just a big hypothetical........ Wild supposition.

Misspelled Daniel Janecke on p.95.

Many thanks to Peter / älgmule / moose snoot of Småland, Sweden for dredging the bowels of the internet, and possibly other sources, churning up info like an auger.

Christian Daniel Janeck obtained his master mechanic's sheepskin circa 1828 and hung out his gunmaking shingle the year of the same or 1829. He can be found as a Büchsenschäfter(gun stocker) at Reitbahngaße 451 in 1829. Two years later in 1831, he is found as a Büchsenmacher and almost 40 years later in 1870 he can be found under his final listing as a Büchsenmacher, being located @ Feldgaße 10. A year later in 1871 only two Janecks are listed in Dresden with both being located @ the same address of Josephinenstraße. One, a Christian Adolf Janeck being an Ingenieur(Engineer) and the other his wife Laura Antoniette Janeck a Lehrein(Teacher). The lone Janeck in Dresden in the 19th century is Lehrerin(Teacher) Franzeska Camilla Janeck and she drops off the map by 1907 but reappears in 1914, possible due to WWI? In the following years up to WWII a few other Janecks pass thru Dresden, but none are listed as gunmakers. Also, similar names like Janecke, Jänicke, Jaenicke and Janecek appear, but none were in the sporting weapons trade.(Paraphrased by yours truly.)

Thanks for all the interesting information on this early European maker. Will be interesting to see if any other Janeck doubles survived. I probably won't shoot it any longer, but continue to admire the fine workmanship, especially, the engraving and locks with their set trigger mechanism.
