That's Joseph Lincoln. Accord Village, Higham, MA. 1859-1938.
His gunning decoys are highly collectible and valuable. I didn't recognize him, but the style of his woodduck was the key. Gil

Hi Gil,
Thanks for that info, its a good sized photo', 12 z 12, with perhaps more under the very thin paper mat. I got it for $2 at a local garage sale with the frame, though glass is cracked, I will re mat it with new glass,...he has an awesome mustache.
thanks again

He has a beautiful, artistic style instead of the rather boring realism of modern plastic decoys. I can't imagine having a whole spread of such decoys.

An admirable mustache, indeed.

Lincoln's "hissing goose" sold at auction in 2016 for $299,000. Gil

I wonder what Mr Lincoln’s reaction would be to know that roughly a century later one of his decoys would sell for $300K?

Mine would be (and actually is now) “for a F-ing decoy?”

Without getting into a big argument, seems to me if you give the right guy a couple days with an original you could get a new one just like it that could only be detected by carbon-14 dating the wood?
Posted By: GLS Re: Anyone know who decoy carver is ? - 04/15/20 01:35 PM
There are forgers around. Usually it's not a whole bird reproduced, but significant repairs which would affect value. Even if one could carbon date the wood, which is probably unlikely for only decades of precision, nothing is to stop someone from using wood salvaged from a period home, barn, etc. Folks go to great lengths to detect forgeries. The paint used in those days was lead based. Hard to find now, but that wouldn't stop an enterprising thief. There are rarely new "discoveries". The most valuable of the birds have longstanding provenances going back for decades and collectors know who have them. Every now and then a fake will slip through an auction. There are contemporary carvers who duplicate birds with no intent to deceive, but once they get into some other's hands, caveat emptor. Most of the contemporary carvers will engrave their names on the bottom, but not all. Gil

The chapter on Joseph Whitting Lincoln, pages 129 - 140 inclusive, is found in "New England Decoys" by Shirley and John Delph, Schiffer Publishing Ltd., Exton, PA 19341. Entire page 129 is relevant biography. Lincoln's picture is on page 130, and appears to be the same gent as in the fourth post of this thread.
A quiet gent, batchelor until 60, rode his bicycle, never drove a car.
"many put him in the top 10 in the country."

Probably not too much, but you could take a stab at Ebay. Gil

Ne'er mind the 'stache; I'm surprised at how long those wooden shingles are! I'm not a home/wood fellow, but is that usual for an era?
