This is really bad.
I was notified 11-30 that Picture Trail is ceasing operations in 90 days. I have used the picture hosting site for almost 15 years as it allows for album narrative and image captions.
That means almost 5000 images here need to be transferred to another site, but I need to save the captions
http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/listing/user/revdocdrew
There are 575 images on this one album
http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/19974446

All these albums need to be recreated
https://lcsca.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=43784&module_id=248779

Every image embedded here needs to be reposted
https://sites.google.com/a/damascusknowledge.com/www/home
https://lcsca.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=274&club_id=43784
https://www.trapshooters.com/threads/tra...r-sport.808693/
https://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewforum.php?f=5

It also means that every image I have ever posted on this and every other internet forum is going to disappear.
My biggest frustration is losing the captions for all the images. Almost all are on my computer but the significance of the image is lost without the description thereof, and many on the website also have links.

So I'm desperately working on transferring the images, while somehow retaining the narrative, and making Word docs out of the existing Picture Trail albums. And will need to create at least 2 new websites.
I started with my ministry Picture Trail site
http://www.picturetrail.com/photos/gracemedicalmissions

This will obviously take ALOT of time so please be patient, esp. with the Damascus, Belgian proofmark & gun I.D., L.C. Smith, Baker, Folsom/Crescent, and trap shooting related albums.
Good luck, Rev. You were posting photos here, before I had any idea how to do it
A bunch of information is at stake.
Best,
Ted

I have no idea why anyone in their right mind would use a Photo Hosting site to store images after what happened with Photobucket. I find it quite easy to post photos here without storing photos on some site that may hold them for ransom as Photobucket did, or one that will simply go out of business.

This is bad news! The work & effort you have put into building the picture trail information is a very valuable asset to the SxS collecting community.

I for one really appreciate everything you have done over the years and I wish you the best of luck in persevering the archives you've established on the picture trail site.

2020 just keeps on giving us more lemons!

Drew, is the Picture Trail site for sale that you know of? Would they be open to that suggestion?... not that I could possibly do anything about it.
Now most all close-up pictures I take are with my IPhone. The resolution is set at Actual and pictures are then downloaded to the Cloud so I can get them when needed.
I had Photobucket for many years and loved it but then they wanted money, so I went to Imgur, so far they are free but I expect that to change also.
Sad to hear...

Who's going to be the next "copy and paste research Queen"....

Here's a question for you dOc...How much of your life you figure you've wasted on the internet ?
Joe, why be nasty and rude? Regards, mrwmartin
Well said W.Martin what was the point of that comment Homeless Joe ?
Queen Frank?

Gay slurs and inferences are often a narcissistic defense mechanism called projection. Self-awareness and emotional insight are not your strong points, but try to think about it. And hatred toward others often is a manifestation of self-hatred, but some people are just mean and miserable.

Not a wasted life Frank. I've always enjoyed learning, and sharing. It is very frustrating that much of the research, some of which is found in no other resource, at least in an organized manner, may be lost.
I am going to prioritize the DamascusKnowledge stuff, esp. the pattern examples, one of which you contributed wink

Drew, you should talk to someone conversant in IT matters, there may be ways to save copies of the pages offline or otherwise download all of your content and keep some semblance of organization to it.

Or, you could just buy picture trail...
Drew, hope you get sorted, I find your Damascus info/pics very helpful. Much appreciated, regards. Mr w martin

RDD, thanks for all you.ve done. Remember no good deed goes unpunished. And the greater the good, the bigger the punishment.

If I were you I would contact a web developer and establish a web site and rent space on a server. Move all your content to a private domain site and server. Much less costly than you think. Our annual server rental costs for the Fox collector site is $100. Contact me if you want recommendations.

A great suggestion Craig... or do like the PGCA did and buy your own server. I'd be willing to chip into the pot to buy one.
Thanks to everyone for the kind words and advice. I'm working on it.

Well stated Drew.

As has been shared already Imgur is decent, and I use it for posting. But in terms of permanent storage for myself? I always want that on my own external hard drive...backed up on a second external hard drive which isn't plugged into anything.

Upgrade both every 3 years or so...and no worries.

Sorry this doesn't solve your current fix.

Drew, I've saved every Reilly post and all the research on an external hard-drive - actually two. Nothing is forever on the internet except for certain intelligence services.

There was a great site a few years ago, militaryphozos.com that had some of the most extraordinary analysis based on open sources of events and capabilities as well as truly insightful history. It went belly up based on copyright issues and everything was lost.

Photobucket of course was the most egregious out and out shake-down ever seen on the internet.

And as a matter of fact, this site is not "forever" unfortunately. None of us are.

Gene, it's like paper vs computers. I remember when the Intel Community switched from paper locked in safes to "secure" computer storage . . . which hasn't turned out to be all that secure. I can remember looking at a lot of very old paper files. Seems that stuff never totally disappeared. Somewhere along the line, people made copies and stuck them into files. I've got binders full of 35MM slides I took over the years. Sold a lot of them along with articles to various hunting magazines. All of which reminds me that I probably should store my digital photos somewhere safe . . . if there is such a place.

I have somewhere north of 300,000 hi-res digital images (35+ terrabytes) archived on my own websites and on external hard drives. The only ones that I consider even moderately secure are the redundant hard drives kept in a safe deposit box. Memory is cheap - irreplaceable images are just that.

Is that what you see in the mirror each morning....

It's kind of ironic, I think, that we find ourselves in a world looking different as a practical matter, than people thought it would be given the technology. Here we thought everything would be "forever" once digitized...and instead, it's the opposite. Once digitized, information can disappear entirely, be easily edited, stolen, etc.

All this convenience technology doesn't amount to much more than exactly that.

Take passwords, for example. We have a zillion of them for all manner of things now. NOBODY can keep track of them all, so we all cheat and use the same passwords. Ironically, the safest way to protect yourself for the most important stuff...is to write it on a Word doc, print it out, and then close the Word doc without saving.

Then stick the paper into a book on your shelf.

Because the odds of someone breaking into your online account, or hacking into your hard drive and viewing your "passwords" file, are way, WAAAAAY greater than someone breaking into your house and finding that paper tucked away in a book.

Also, as I said earlier in this thread, I keep all my gun pics/reference material backed up on an external hard drive ($50 on Amazon) that IS NOT connected to the internet, and therefore won't get corrupted/infected/hacked. Just rotate into a new one every couple of years.

Offline and/or analog things might be slower or less convenient...but they're more secure.

So sorry to hear this Drew. Your research and pics have enhanced the lives all double gun aficionados. I hope you’re able to save and secure everything.

You may want to make sure that the web archive has copied your sites. It may give you some time to sort things out.

Sorry to read of this.

Build your own server with redundant mirrored drives.

Sooner or later they all let you down.

So, you'd also need a third party service for offsite.

Let the board know what you need.

Christmas is near at hand.
