Did Gun Digest (or anybody else) publish a collection of the Proof Mark articles that were in the 50s and 60s Gun Digests? They were mostly written by Baron Engelhardt.

There was some talk in the articles about a book or collection, but it never seemed to happen. If there were other articles by a different author in Gun Digest, I am not aware of them. Hopefully some one will have more information.

You can usually pick these Gun Digests up on eBay for a few dollars each, plus shipping.

You should be aware these articles, while very good are somewhat dated. He did them mostly in 70's. Some of the eastern European information is limited. None of the articles has any date codes, if I recall correctly. Also the subject of makers marks (trade marks) is never touched.

Gun Digest Treasury Fifteen Years

The 15 yr Treasury contains 9 articles by A Baron Engehardt published throughout the 50's. The ones mentioned by Kennett are, as noted later. Both are good, if you can find a copy of the Treasury that puts all those in one handy volume. The ones by Kennet will have a few rules which were passed between times.

I have both the Kennett articles and the Treasury. The latter is great, with significant detail, but very dated. The British chapter, for example, ends with the 1925 Rules of Proof.

Somebody needs to do a complete update, to include the post-Kennett changes.

The last article of the Englehardt series on Proof is Chapter X English Proof 1925-54 and is in the 1962 Gun Digest. The 15 year Treasury + '62 provide the whole magilla.

These old Gun Digests are all new reading for me, and at 2 or 3 bucks apiece, irresistable.

Yeti, thanks! Kennett covers up through the 1954 changes in his article, and also provides some information on more recent changes in other European countries. Those, along with the Engelhardt series in the Treasury, are about as good as it gets. However, even the Kennett articles miss the most recent changes--like those in England, post-1989.
