I started a post on hear a couple weeks ago about shooting a couple of Bats, The responce's I recieved Were everything from being turned in to the Michigan D.N.R. to basically being told I was giving the Anti's more ammo against hunters & Called everything but a sportsman. ALL This with out a single one of these assholes Checking or knowing what the laws here are or what the situation here is.
Even after explaining the Rabid Bat situation & assuring those on here that it is LEGAL to shoot Bats here, I have been treated worse than I have EVER treated anyone in my life. I am No saint but I didn't deserve the the treatment I recieved.
I have explained that the D.N.R. Told me to shoot as many Bats as possible & That the local chief of police & Local D.N.R. officer were coming out to shoot some Bats also I am still being told its Not right& Told i am not a ethical sportsman.
Do to this i have had enough. Remove me from this forum & Remove all my info please. I wish to be associated with Almost None of the People on here
To those that defended me. THANK YOU. To those that appoligised after I explained the situation. Thank you.
As for the rest... May you reap what you sow.

MOST of the time bats are not to be shot because many are protected in many locations even in Michigan. (Reading the regulations, I find it is probably legal to shoot a rabid bat. This is most likely because, as you correctly note, they are extremely hard to hit.) MOST of the time, people here are reasonably well informed and take the time to read through a thread. MOST of the time, it would be wise to have an informative heading or topic sentence to explain why what you are doing is different than might be the norm. You needn't leave so please reconsider and we'll all take a lesson from this experience.

I agree with Montana. In your initial post you should have explained what was going on for you to shoot these bats. I think most wouldn't have bashed you like they did.
Also in the case of rabid animals/mammals, they don't behave like they should normally. For example racoons feed at night, if you see one during the day roaming around you can probably guarantee that it is rabid. (won't be foaming at the mouth becasue they have no saliva glands). This is true with all animals that have rabies, they are dying slowly. For this reason I would say that errant behavior for bats would be the same, not flying around looking for insects, but disorientated. Since all North American bats are insect/fruit eaters the rabid ones had to get bit by something rabid. Maybe one of your DNR specialists could tell more.
You did what you thought was right, but not approved by most who read your initial post.
I wouldn't leave because of this, it is a great place and a lot of knowledge is here, you just have to know how to word it right.
Good luck.
David

I ask that you reconsider and view it from the position of there being a silent majority who doesn't pass judgement until all the facts are known, and then might not say anything anyway. I have followed it but haven't posted a response until now.

Don't be so thin skinned. Life's too short to take other people's opinions so seriously, especially when they have no bearing on your life.

Sooner or later everyone winds up in a shouting match/disareement with someone else or others. Been there, been through it with another poster here on this board. It's no big deal, so don't take anything personally and don't hold a grudge. It's not worth it.

Attention bat-o-phile members of Doublegun BBS!!! Look to Texas for your new mission!!

Bat infestation forces Texas Southern students out of dorm

Associated Press

Last update: September 19, 2007 – 8:35 AM

HOUSTON — Bats took over a university dormitory, forcing more than 200 students into hotels and worrying health officials, who now fear the students could have been exposed to rabies.
Videos posted on the Internet show students swinging a broom and a tennis racket as several bats fly about in a dormitory hallway at Texas Southern University. One student, 19-year-old Jason Smith, said he killed dozens of bats but didn't know of anyone who was bitten.

"When we saw the video, we knew we had a problem," said Kathy Barton, a spokeswoman for the city of Houston's health department.

Health officials asked students who had been in Lanier Hall East to meet with them this week to determine whether any would need rabies vaccinations.

Texas Southern officials, meanwhile, are trying to rid the dorm of the bat infestation, said university spokesman Terrence Jackson. It wasn't clear how many bats were in the building. Exterminators went to the dorm on Monday.

Rabies is a viral disease most often transmitted through a bite from an infected animal. It attacks the central nervous system and, if untreated, can lead to paralysis, difficulty swallowing and death.

I have visions of young Jason Smith being dragged out to the quad and drawn and quartered.

I sat on the sidelines on this one. Didnt really see the big emotional problem but thats me. Anyway, my thoughts now that you have chosen to depart the site.

Dont be so hasty. You are reacting without thought as quickly as those that you criticize. Just like all of us has at one time or another in our lives have done something we shouldnt have or shot something out of season, on posted land, went over the bag limit, shot our firends birds to make his limit etc. etc. We all tend to forget our previous transgressions and are quick to snipe at those who speak of their actions (good or bad) . Believe me, I am not perfect and I am not real tolerant but sitting on the sidelines of this diatribe, I can only say nto not let them wear you down. Those that are quick to call the DNR or other authorities when they dont even live in your state need to examine their own lives and deeds.

Dont cut your nose off over this and dont make the same error twice. Temper your posts with forethought.

Jeff,
A couple of things for you to consider:

When online try not to take things so personal. I am assuming that you are under thirty because of your intense responses. Take a step back and calm down before responding. There are always a few loud voices that try to get you worked up s0me dO it just f0r fun.

Keep your responses polite (no ranting or cursing) and factual. Fighting back only causes people who cant defend their actions to resort to personal attack.

Read over what you write before you hit the submit button. Check for spelling errors. Everybody makes some mistakes but try to keep them to a minimum. I know that is hard to do when angry but its important.

The responses to your thread were stunning and Im sorry you went through it and that you were turned in. There are a lot of people on here with common sense, who avoid posts that stray from the subject matter(doubleguns). There isnt another website that comes close to the excellent info available here.

To those afraid of the environmentalist nuts, you are wrong about fueling their fires. They will use legal hunting if they cant find something more controversial.

Stick around, calm down, find something related to guns to talk about and contribute to the good information here.

Herb, you're an American in a wonderful state contributing to a board comprised of mostly Americans of conservative views.

I'm a Canadian left-winger in a "socialist" country whose opinions elicit a few jabs, heart-felt and sincere.

That's life. There's no one on the board I wouldn't invite to our home. My notion of Hell would be everyone thinking like me.

Uhhhhhh? I wouldn't say no bearing. Did you happen to miss the part where someone took it upon themselves to call the Conservation Police on Jeff?

An argument on a bulletin board is one thing, going to the real life authorities (before you have all of the facts) is another. I do not think that it is fair to say he is being thin skinned.
Posted By: Drew Hause Re: Dear Admin. - 09/22/07 01:39 PM
By profession and calling, I try to look for the best, but expect the worst from people, and am rarely surprised. I'm mostly saddened that the Urban Gang 'No Snitch' Culture has apparently penetrated so deeply into the shooting and hunting fraternity. And 'proof texting' God's Word, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her" is used as justification for ignoring or enabling bad behaviour (sin.) Please read on to John 8:11 where Jesus told the lady to "leave your life of sin."
So what would YOU do given these senarios?:
1. You're at a gun show, notice an unattended table, and see a guy slip a Colt SAA into his satchel. Friend of the owner? His gun? Do you 'have all the facts?' Take it upon yourself to 'investigate' or let those with the power and authority to do so figure it out?
2. Your neighbor on meth has two dogs chained in the backyard without shelter, water or food?
3. You witness a woman hit her 7 year old with a closed fist in the aisle of Wal-Mart?
4. You're concerned about inappropriate touching by a deacon in the church day care?
5. This one is like a thousand time different but IT HAPPENS. Your favorite niece, 12 years old, daughter of your drug addict sister, calls you from 5 states away because mom's new boyfriend told her he want to have sex with her. Call the authorities? Drive over and shoot the guy?
My goodness, compared with what I see every day, shooting bats is pretty meaningless. And each of us gets to decide where we draw the line past which we'll intervene (actually law enforcement, teachers, and medical workers have a legal 'duty to report' abuse or neglect of children and elderly.)
Jeff: I haven't lost a minute of sleep over this, and you shouldn't either.
Can we go back to talking about doubleguns now?

Posted By: reb87 Re: Dear Admin. - 09/22/07 05:52 PM
Doc,
I think you have a line with action that is harmful to people directly or indirectly and cruelty to animals( I dont mean hunting or shooting). I would add action that is both unlawful(the state) and against God's law. Getting a govt agency involved in someones life for something that isnt covered by the above is troubling to me. Sometimes the govt makes mistakes and most govt employees are carrying guns now. Before you scoff at my remarks think about Ruby Ridge and Waco. Getting a govt agency that carries guns involved in someones life shouldnt be done lightly.
Respectfully,
Ross

This is the original post that started it all. Let's see if I've got this straight. Some guy who apparentely none of us know makes a post about shooting non-game animals and apparentely is publicly bragging about it. This is just the type of information the antis are always looking for.
So now those of us who took exception to this are now bad guys! I think we have now entered the Twi-Light Zone. Would Rod Serling please sign in.

This is the third board I've visited this week afflicted with the "I guess I wish I were somewhere else" malady. I bet we could all find something better to talk about...how about if we declare a draw on this one? Or, how about everyone posts their last word on the subject today and no one comes back to read same? We could make much of many things but need not do it on Dave's BBS and the sun is out where I am.

Apparently not -

italiansxs he was shooting a non-game species, true, but same is true when people talk about shooting starlings or pigeons. Many years ago we had a discussion on here about shooting rats and mice with a smoothbore 22. I don't think anyone raised a big stink. I will have to double check the regs, but I don't remember Rats being a game animal...
Posted By: Jakearoo Re: Dear Admin. - 09/23/07 12:22 AM
I would like to see this regulation that says its ok to shoot bats. I find it hard to believe. And, for sure, one can't tell that the bats they are shooting are rabid. My dear mama, God rest her, told me bats were good things. They eat bugs.

Now, since this is the double gun forum, what is the best choke and shot size? ;-)

4.Talk to the Deacon & the child first, then if it seems the correct thing to do call the heads of the Church & if not satisfied call the police.

Most state game regs specify which nongame animals are excluded from being shot - otherwise they are shootable. No one protects vermin like rats and feral pigeons. Most western states also include jack rabbits as vermin.

GOOD GOD! _______ Is this Bat squabble still going on here?

For a solid week I watched valid double gun questions and
interesting double gun subjects fall by the wayside so grown men
could bury themselves in this ridiculous debate over Bat do's and
don'ts. Looks like two old women fighting over the last loaf of
bread at the supermarket. To top it all off a self proclaimed
do-gooder in Arizona then decides to call in the law on someone
in Michigan and report them for WHAT? _______ I find Drew's
actions 10 times more offensive than Jeff shooting a few rabid
Bat's around his home. I once thought Dr. Drew was an ok guy, but
he has terribly embarrassed himself here this week. The world
already has enough tattle tales and it doesn't need another. Get
a life people and find something constructive to do with your
time, lets talk guns, hunting, and give this dead Horse-Bat topic
a rest.

Balance, balance, 10-bore. Life isn't all constructive, neither is this board. There's lots of talk of guns and hunting here. No harm from a little fun.

Look at the menu: there are lots of choices. Mind you, some members only read the menu and others eat the food. Eh, Lowell?

Posted By: King Brown Re: Dear Admin. - 09/23/07 09:32 PM
No, 10-bore. The board is infotainment for me: Jeff shooting bats on suspicion of rabies being reported to the law by a guy in another state with ricochets to Judas Iscariot and Our Saviour is more to smile about than making injunctions to the board on how to behave.
