I was tooling around, considering some options for removing rust when I came across this method:

I sure hope he's using an Idaho potato!
Kind of looked to me like have could have done the same thing in 15-30 minutes with Scotch Brite and some Liquid Wrench or WD-40.
Pete, you have way too much time on your hands!

Actually, I think we could put our shotgun bbls that need a treatment in a long blueing trough when we boil Potatoes for our Southern Potato Salad and really get efficient with this gunstuff.:)
What a waste of good potato.
I sure hope he's using an Idaho potato!
If an "Idaho" takes it off, does a "Russet" make it rus(t)?
you mean a rust-it potatoe?
Idaho potatos are Russets. (From one who picked a lot of potatos manually in Idaho as a kid for .07 cents per sack).
Definitely low tech, but also very slow. Instead of a two-week soak with a potato, I get the same results with a two-day soak in white vinegar, $.99/gallon. Just did a cast iron bench vise that had been out in the weather for a few years and most of the rust washed off with a garden hose. The vinegar is reuseable.
Replacement:
How does it affect the taste?
Adds color and character, makes it resemble red wine vinegar.
Also smells better than rotting potatoes.

How did you get to AZ at .07 cents per sack!!
