In the world of shotguns, this is perhaps the biggest oddity. This gun, though not a double, does fold into double by design. It was made for law enforcement and not sporting, but I have used it in cowboy action shooting and an occasional bird.

Andrew Burgess, though less known than Browning, had designed and patented hundreds of guns and remains an unknown in the gun world, much as this folding shotgun does...

How does it work? Looks to have a magazine.

It is a wrist-slide action that works by pulling the grip rearward when fired to eject the shell and load a new one...

I have several, even like the one on that auction. Here is one of the rarest you will ever see, a cutaway Burgess...

I have owned one Burgess (non-folding), and looked at a number of others over the years. Yours is as nice as any I have seen and the folding feature makes it even cooler. Currently I'm considering restoring a Model 1901 Winchester lever action shotgun. I read somewhere that Winchester built some 50-110 rifles on the 1901 action. Any thoughts on whether the action would stand up to that round? Maybe I could rifle the barrel and shoot 10 Ga. slugs--how about that for a "stopping rifle"?

actually Winchester built some [ a few ] model 1887s [ predecessor to 1901 ] with rifled barrel in .75 caliber, with maybe 150 gr of powder and a huge lead bullet....cartridges have survived and it was shown on their cartridge boards. it is written up in Cartridges of the World

would be an interesting build on the 1901 shotgun. I have very nice 1901 [ have had several at times ] and it is a slick impressively smooth gun.

with a rifled barrel like you said, it would stop about anything !

The biggest problem would be the rotating action and how strong it would be. They aren't real reliable in the extraction dept. either. Cycling the cartridge out of the magazine and into the chamber would be an interesting feat as well.

The action rotating like it does, will be the biggest obstacle in making something like that work, as the length of the cartridge would be the determining factor as to whether or not it would feed and extract.

Howdy gents,

I much appreciated seeing those pics of the Burgess shotguns. I took one all apart several years ago for a client, ultrasonically cleaned and lubed it, fitted an original main spring and put it all back together into a fully functional arm again for him.

Needless to say, no exploded view or breakdown description could be found at the time, so I was on my own. While I had it all apart, I took 84 pics of it from just about every standpoint I could then conceive of. I had intended to post those pics on my FLICKR web site in my 'Just Out Of Curiosity!' collection, but I had never gotten around to it.

Upon accidently running onto this post today, it spurred me into action to 'get 'r done' so that some of the intricacies of this most interesting mechanism could be seen by those with an interest. This link should take you right to it:

On FLICKR, click on any of the small pics to enlarge them on a gray colored field, and a captions appear underneath in the white area.

Retired antique dealer near me has one in nickel plate with fancy stock and a ratty leather holster. He doesn't want to sell it as it was his grandfathers.Pretty neat looking.
