Question: Is there a remote possibility that a Single Lever Jaeger Side Mount can be made to work on a Single Lever G&H Base already mounted? Thanks as always! Jerry

I was told that it would work - by the gunsmith at San Francisco Gun Exchange circa 1990. Whether he was right remains to be proven!

Also tried a late Jaeger bracket. Did not go, but almost did. I think a little hand fitting would slide it on.

I recently acquired several NOS Jaeger single-lever side mounts with blank bases plus a number of spare blank bases. Apparently these are the last remaining stock of the Jaeger firm/name when they quit their business in TN but I'm not sure of the details.

These mounts are all brand new, never been on a rifle, and none of the dovetails, NONE OF THEM, are interchangeable with one another. They show the usual bell curve distribution, a couple being larger and smaller while the rest fall somewhere in the middle. Only a few thousandths difference between most of them, but it's enough to notice. Here's a photo of the two types of bases I received, the top one is already machined on its back side for the large ring of a Mauser while the other is left thick & flat & long for fitting to anything including a Mannlicher-Schoenauer.


The point of this post is that I have enough spare blank bases so that the odds are good that I can find one to fit an orphan mount even if it's a G&H. Similarly with the mounts, I sent Jerry a couple of different-sized Jaeger mounts to try on his G&H base and we'll see how they fit. He has my smallest and my largest, so if his base falls somewhere in between them then I can probably match it and he'll be in business. We'll see.

operations performed on it so that it can accept the Jaeger locking system?

Yes, but these machining operations are simple when compared to fabbing the entire base. Actually, if the dovetails are close enough dimensionally, all needed alterations can be done with a hand grinder and files. That's the advantage of beginning with a slightly-oversize base (or as in this case, with a slightly-undersize mount), it can be fitted closely to the mount during the needed alterations. It won't be a bolt-on conversion but we hope it'll be at least close enough to work after a little persuasion(grin).

If we're VERY lucky, I'll have a Jaeger mount that will be a close-enough fit on his G&H base so that the base will still be usable with the original G&H mount if it's ever located.

Well I'm pleased to announce J.D. Steele has done it again!!! The NOS Paul Jaeger Single Lever side scope mounts, he has are BEAUTIFUL! As you all know, I have been looking for G&H Single Lever side mount that doesn't cost more, than I paid for the rifle with G&H base. He sent me three to try and the very FIRST one fit like a glove! Unbelievable! The price $225 is a steal. Look on Ebay and they want more for the Jaegers and end up going for more there, ragged out. Mine had no storage wear at all, time warp NEW! Now all I have to do is figure out how I'm going to lock my mount down, whether I'm going to use the Jaeger push button locking mechanism or a simple set screw, so as not to alter the G&H MOUNT PERMANENTLY. Simple easy Suggestions anyone? I suggest anyone who collects,deals, or thinks they might collect classic rifles, get at least one while available. I'm going through my den wall racks looking for an excuse to buy several more. You can't go wrong and finally my G&H Single Lever problem is solved, at least as far as shooting goes!!!
