I just bought a rifle with what seems to be a Noske detachable side mount. I haven't seen it in hand yet. I've known of these mounts forever but never owned one yet. Are they OK?

The Noske mount came in different variations. The one I have
slides onto the dovetail base and is held in place by a screw that
has a large knurled head and comes through the ring assembly
from above. It seems to be made with very close tolerances and
is held firmly in place. It is not quick detachable like
those that can be released by levers. It is on an NRA Sporter
that I have never fired.

Bill,
I have at least 3 different Noske mounts on rifles, one is like Herschel says with the screw from the top, another has the locking screw from the side and I think the last model had two screws from the side which end up flush unlike the other where the screw sticks out from the mount. Let me know when you get it if I can help you. I believe they work just fine.

Thanks, Herschel and Dan. The one I have coming is the type with two large screws on the side.

Bill,

Mark Penrod recently mounted a Noske scope in a Noske mount for me on my Springfield .35 Whelen. I have been using Noske scopes for years and am convinced of their high quality. I expect no less from the mount, which is like the one you describe.
Notice the perfectly timed screw slots, typical of Mark's fine work.

I believe all Noske mounts were made to fit the 22mm/7/8" diameter Noske scopes, like the one shown in the photos.

Correction: I think the mount I have coming is an Echo. Any opinions on that name?

I have had only one experience with an Echo mount and it was not very favorable. It was on a pre-64 Model 70 Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum and evidently the recoil was such that in order to prevent the scope (a Lyman Alaskan) from sliding in the rings, the previous owner had filed depressions in the scope tube and used pointed set screws in the rings to stabilize it. I have avoided Echos like the plague since then.

I had the mount removed and replaced with a Griffin & Howe side mount. I sent the scope back to Lyman, who replaced the tube and completely refurbished the scope for a modest price. This was back in the 1960's, when everything was a lot cheaper. I believe that Model 70 was one of the pre-War models with the straight taper barrel. I found it a little heavy to carry around and parted with it eventuallly.
