I got some idea now how the Germans felt when they heard Ike was comming.I'm about fifteen miles from Galveston Island and the Great State of Texas has learned nothing from three years ago. All roads out at gridlock and town is out of gas.Contraflow on highways ain't happened yet and cars are already running out of gas on freeways,no real inbound traffic just stalled out bound looking across at the open not used lanes.Still at least 36 hours out but the media has it kicking in our doors as we listen and watch the mayhem on the roads through the Instant EYE OMG T.V.I have four building so at least one should remain standing for shelter, lots of water, propane and food. Ya'll around Austin and San Antone watch for the spinny things.God Bless

I was wondering about you Will. Whether or not you would leave or sit it out. Take care and keep your head down.

Milton I looked at the Atlas and Santa Fe, Texas looks pretty close to Galveston Bay. If it floods, Keep Your head UP not Down. That thing must be pretty powerful since we're getting rain and storm bands from it all the way over here in South Georgia...Geo

My thought was 100+ mph winds and the things they blow around. Thus my "keep your head down" Stay safe, Will.

I have been through a few down here in South Florida. Good preparation before makes afterwards alot easier. Buckle the house up tight. Make sure you have lots of fresh water stored in a secure place. Freeze some milk jugs solid now and use them like block ice in the fridge. Drink them as they melt. Don't open the fridge unless you have to and when it starts to thaw, cook it all up and eat well. All this assumes you loose power.
Extra propane and fuel is great to have. My basics are water, food, propane, gas for the generator, flashlights / batteries lots of 12 gauge shells and the shorty Remington 870 for univited visitors.
Stay safe and my prayers are with ya'll.
Mike
earplugs help because once the winds get over about 95 mph, it sounds like a freight train ;-)

Good luck down there. I'm in Austin and really hoping for some good rain out of this but I sure hope everybody stays OK down your way. A couple of weeks ago I went over to Lake Charles to board up my folks place. Just talked to them and the water is rising fast already. This is shaping up to be a really bad storm. Robert Krull

Amigo Will, You are absolutely right and have to wonder about the sanity and competence of the government folks orchestrating these disaster evacuations. Here in Pennsylvania where road repair is a three season affair, we often see Northbound traffic diverted into a Southbound lane. Sad to see these fools getting good pay, benefits, and retirement plans at taxpayers expense, and screw up so bad, so often, they wouldn't last 5 minutes in the private sector. Good luck and keep your powder dry.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that "Ike" decides to spend more time at HQ with Kay- his Limey Lady "Aide-de-Camp and driver"- was it 100 years ago a hurricane devastated Galveston- Mama Mia- but as a Gyrene, you already know to "take the high ground" just hope you can hold your position- Old Mother Nature is a mean Bitch- but she is a Fair Mean Bitch- when she gets her PMS a rollin' with a full head of steam, whoever gets in her way, whether they drive a GMC 1/2 ton and shoot a LeFever Nitro Express, or a BMW and shoot a Purdey- she is gonna kick ass and take names her way- what was it that old "Light Bulb" Johnson once said about "The 'Nam" -- oh yeah- like a hitchhiker caught on a Texas panhandle highway in a hurricane- No where no run, no where to hide, no way to make it stop. Muy Buena Suerte, amigo!!
