Whitey,

The shipment of solvents and flammable items over the pond is a real hornet's nest, unfortunately. I probably had better stick to my CCL gunstock finishing stuff, it also gives good results.

Steve, thanks for the details. I'm going to try this if I can find the stuff. I know I can find the stain by mail order, but the solvent, if I can't use something else, that may be an issue. I don't know where to buy it off the shelf and mail ordering solvent is, I suspect, rather difficult.

I don't suppose you find it at some sort of national chain store like Lowe's or Walmart by chance?

I really appreciate the information on gunstock staining. Since JD is building me a Springfield sporter I've become hypersensitive to all the details and this is one of the most important.

Thanks for the posting, Steven.

A couple of question; is the stain opaque like ground pigment stains or is it translucent like aniline dye? Looks more like the latter which is better for not hiding nice wood, IMHO. Does the solvent smell like methanol? What with the "ol" ending, one might wonder and there are some nice achohol-solvent dyes out there. I generally use aniline dye (both water and oil soluable) to achive the Alkanet root look, but Im always looking for a better way.

Good shooting,

C.

Stain & solvent (this link should be good)
American walnut is much redder than the color swatch shown, Blood Red is way tooo red, IMHO
Behkol "A combination of Denatured Ethanol and Isobutanol"

Here is a link for the solvent. Rockler is a good source for Behlen products.

Not sure if you have a Woodcrafters store in your area, but mine carries all those products.

Steve

Have you ever used the Solar-Lux Retarder mixed in with the stain?. I have found that the retarder will allow the blending to work better as it doesn't dry as fast for possible blotches in color. I suually put about 5 percent in with the stain.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Regards, Gordon
