When I told my good friend James Tucker about this stain, he wrote back that he was getting something to Slow the drying time! I said, "Why would you want to slow any stock finishing!?!>" I stained maple longrifle stocks for many years and grew accustomed to working rapidly. (notice the blurrur of my handdss in the ffirst picc) But thanks K&J, I'm sure others will benifit from your suggestion, Tucker concurs. (Akjeff- I owe you about 2 emails! Thanks I Loved the roller bird pic!)

SDH, I too want to thank you for taking the time to post this. It is very much appreciated. One other question if I may, where are you getting that good looking ebony or is that a "Military secret"?

Red, I'm almost ashamed to admit it...A good friend, the head luthier at Gibson Acoustic Guitar, travels the world buying wood for instruments. He gave me (Yes, gave me!!) two 2x2x24" sticks of richeously black ebony. I think he said they were bassoon blanks(?) given to him by a German wood merchant. I was down to my last forend size piece, and had no idea where to get more. I've always been very lucky in obtaining jet black ebony, I believe the last I bought from Jim Preslik a dozen or more years ago. So I don't really have a supplier, but just may have a lifetime supply...
BTW: the fellow I'm building the Hagn for just stopped by (from Wisconsin) on his way elk hunting. He was pretty pleased to see the stock, and absolutely delighted to see his rifle on this post!

Steve,
Glad you enjoyed the roller photo!
The lines on that stock are simply perfection. A continual flow from butt to muzzle. Can't wait to see a photo, when completed.

Steve,
I got a Woodcraft flyer in the mail the other day with "solid black" (per advertising) ebony 2 X 2 X 24 for around $23. It should be here in the next couple days - I'll let you know how it looks when it gets here. I've been using horn lately, but I thought the ebony was cheap enough I just bought some for the shelf.
Michael, I have done some experimenting with the red dye. I mixed 5 drops of dye with ~ 150ml (that's the mark on the bottle, I'm not really into the Metric System) mineral spirits just to get the intesity of the dye into a managable media. I then started mixing it into raw linseed oil, then heated slowly to let the oil take on a brown color of its own. I used about 1/2oz of the 5drops/150ml mixture in a pint of linseed oil and it makes a nice finish. I have been using it lately and am happy with it. I'll try to post some pix later.

Steve , Good post on staining . Im currently playing with Mohawk stain just because the have a retailer near my house. It is good quality stain, though their color charts arent very accurate.
I bought some mohawk "ox-blood", its a grape/purble color,Wow. Got a sample of the "Red" on a piece of my englsih walnut scrap-Their "red" is orange. Id have to try and mix something to try and get a usable stain for gunstocks
I then bought some Laurel Mtn "cherry" stain to see what it look like. Seems like a Reddish burnt sienna color and might work. I Tryed it today on a couple scarps english walnut, One a dark piece the other a pretty blond piece with good mineral steaks. In about 4 hours ill put some Dalys on them to see how it looks
I cant get your pictures to show on your post SDH. Either here or Accurate Reloading, What picture site are you useing? My PC is old window 98

Thanks all! Have been mule deer hunting with Jerry Fisher & Friends for the past several days east of Roundup, MT. Got to see a 1970's vintage 30-06 Fisher rifle and a 1980's Fisher ( both Mauser's) in 7x57 with Tom Burgess metal and Tessier walnut, with Jerry there to comment on each. A shortage of lighting and an excess of bourbon prevented me from capturing photos, except of Fisher's well worn 7 mag (about '60's vintage) with the 3 point he shot. I'll post maybe later.
Keep me posted on the quality of ebony, sure sounds like a reasonable price if it's good and black! Also wonder about getting good horn, but I'm really afraid of it since ther worms attacked my powder horns!!!!
And keep any info on staining coming (GSP, pics just posted on PhotoBucket!?!? Will send how-to's as email if you want. Anyone else can't see my pics?) Best, Steve
