This is perhaps a bit off topic; however I have been offered a nice 98 Mauser made by Emil Kerner & Sohn in 7x57. The rifle is tastefully engraved and has a part octagon 23" barrel with a rib on it and a horn triggerguard. The rifle also features a sliding safety similar to the ones seen on Greener doubles. Overall it is a very nice rifle with a nice walnut pistol grip stock and basically looks unaltered. The only downside that I can see is that it takes a claw type scope mount and of course the rings are not present. The asking price is $900, sound reasonable?

good caliber, but that's about it. i would get new kimber or winchester from sc instead. these are NEW rifles which are easy to scope. new ruger rifle with rings would be less expensive.
i looked at near mint 7x57 pre-war mauser sporter with peep sight priced at $1500. i bought cz550 battue mannlicher 9,3x62 instead. why? got new rifle 1", 30mm rings, Kahles Helia 1,5-6x42 scope, 4 boxes of norma ammo for just under 1500US. sometimes there is nothing quite like new equipment.

Sounds nice but I would want to see some pics.Be sure to check Bore condition, and that numbers match on bolt. You can have another set of claw mounts done but they are not cheap, could be much as you will pay for the rifle.
here is a expired listing on G/A

You may want to post this question in the rifle section

even if it had old mounts it is highly unlikely you could mount new optic in them. i have looked through those old scopes (zeiss, hensoldt, oigee,...)with just elevation dial-style knob on them and from optical point they are next to worthless equal to $60-$80 tasco. many have solid brass tubes suitable for use as hammers, but that's about it. the new 30mm helia is first class i would say beyond reproach. ;)\
some folks collect old stuff and that's ok. i had early 60s 3x meopta scope left over from old brno .22 which i scoped with new leupold 2-7x rimfire in new mounts. i gave that old czech scope to zg-47 owner because it fit his mounts and he thought it was best thing since sliced bread.

Jager,
you can have the claw mounts made for the the old claw bases, several gunsmiths do them.L&L and NECG can do it.You can put both the older,I have a couple Hensoldts that work fine or newer ones. Not cheap,if you want cheap find another hobby !
I would not let the mounts get in the way of the buying that gun,as I said they are not cheap thou.Much more fun to shoot with a old classic then a Kimber(nothing against Kimber I have a CDPII has my carry gun now).

Alex:

Buy the gun if you like it and shoot it like it was meant to be shot....with iron sights...!.........Those old Mauser Sporters are very nice rifles....
JMHO....FWIW.....I have about 20 rifles that I shoot iron sights only....from elk to bear and in between......that's why they call it "hunting"..........

Best Regards,

Doug
