I recently came across a SXS by Jan Visser of Deventer (Holland) with Belgian proofs and a reversed j on the barrel flats. The gun is a boxlock with ejectors, 27.5" barrels, English stock , 12G @ 6.46 lbs.I Googled the name and town but only came up with a list of two guns auctioned by Holts. I am interested in more information about this gunmaker and his guns. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Wayne S

You can look up the Belgian proof and trade marks here:

I need to get to my reference material and check on Visser for you.

In 1892 J. Visser registered a patent in Belgium. I believe it was for a cocking indicator, but could be wrong. I have no address on him, nor any registered trade marks.

I haven't found much either and if I have read it correctly the gunmaking firm Jan Visser began in mid 1850 and ceased in the late 1970s??? Hopefully Jani will be along with info.

PeteM,
Thanks for the link. I believe the patent was for his ejector mechanism but I could be mistaken on this. I haven't found anything on the reversed "j" yet.The gun was originally chambered for 2.5" but was overstamped with 2.75. At some time, I assume recently ,Briley thin wall chokes were installed. Thanks Wayne S.

I don't have his email address but say that he would be in the know. Is the backwards "j" one of Greek letters from the 1950s date code?

Raimey,
In reviewing the Belgian date codes it seems that the reverse j is in fact a cursive i according to the info provided by PeteM, which puts the gun at a mfg.or proof date of 1930 .
Thanks again, Wayne Sorce
