Just curious about the hatch in your area. I live in western Riverside County, Ca. and I do not believe that I have ever seen as good a hatch. We have not had a lot of rain but seems to have come at the right time as natural feed appears to be more than sufficient.

Haven't seen any broods yet but the whistling males are everywhere. I see birds everytime I run my dog. We're getting plenty of rain. Good for the woods recovering from the controlled burns and good for the young quail that need insects.

Too early to tell here, but I have a hunch it will be a decent hatch this year! It seems the weather has been condusive to a good hatch, likewise for the chukar and pheasant.

Don't have a good idea yet in the Texas Panhandle. Rains have been spotty but there appears to be a decent population of bugs--critically important to survival of young birds.

Talking about California Quail ("Valley" Quail) now, I haven't seen any chicks yet in Coast Range. I flushed a covey of adults last weekend in the Santa Ana Mountains (Eastern Orange County) and wondered why they were not paired up yet....not a good sign, I think. Also saw a covey of adults near Quail Hill south of Irvine.
Doubletrouble, I think I must have been just over the hill from you in Silverado Canyon; did all the fertile quail run over the mountains to your side?
Was in Hunter-Liggett two weeks ago and heard lots of calling in the canyons, but saw no chicks. No coveys either; just males doing lookout duty in trees. Do they do this when mama is hatching eggs?

There are Gambels Quail literally everywhere here. There are a pair that have nested in either a corner of my yard or a neighbors yard as I've seen them with their chicks(around 10) walking on the dividing wall. Our subdivision is loaded with them and it's rare for me to step outside without seeing some Quail. Looks like it's going to be a banner year for hunting. Jim

Plenty of Gambel's around the neighborhood (about 5400' here) saw the first chicks a few days ago. Went out to an old favorite hunting area in the Nat'l Forest a few days ago and didn't hear many birds calling though.

Mike, you are correct I am almost directly east of you about 30 miles as flys the crow. I cannot imagine no chicks yet as we have three-quarter grown now plus newborn. There are still lots of pairs together with no young but there are no adult coveys. Tom

This guy just strolled by. Unfortunately, the HOA takes a dim view of eating the neighbors Looks to be an early Monsoon, and if so SE AZ Mearns and Blues should be great
