Can't seem to find who authored this patent, patent gas check no. 747. it is on a perkes patent action ( no. 1968 of 1878 )SLNE
looks identical to scott's

can't find it listed in british gunmakers (both volumes) or any of boothroyds books either.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Possibly the number 747 is a use number, not a patent no. I have a Scott using that patent and I think it a U.S.A. patent by W.M. Scott and T. Baker, number 264772 of Sept. 19, 1882. It is also British patent 617 of 1882, by William Middleditch Scott and Thomas Baker.

I think Daryl is right. As far as I know, Scott patented that style of gas check.

The gun you are looking at was probably made by them. They built a ton of Perkes-patent backactions for the trade.

I agree with Daryl, this is Wm;Scott and T Baker patent 617 of 1882; "Gas vents on action face." Patent use numbers are often found on early hammerless guns by many makers. Scott,s manufactured many guns for H&H pre 1900, a business relationship that continued into the 1970,s ultimately ending with H&H,s aquisition of the Scott business. For this reason Scott patents are sometimes found on early guns attributed to H&H.
