Does anyone know how to get a decent trigger pull on a m-54? I just found a .220 swift stocked and done up by G&H [neat rifle]. They tried to alter the sear for a single pull with an adjustment screw, but when you finally get a good crisp pull, the bolt won't stay in the rifle. When the bolt stop is working, the pull is a bit like pulling a cat off a screen door. My next thought is to find an unaltered trigger, and go back to a double pull.
Has anyone tried to put a m-70 trigger in?

The later revised M-54 which became the Great pre-64 M70 has a different bolt release than the M-54. I have a SuperGrade M54 in .220 Swift also- my late Father bought it in 1938- later sent it to Winchester and they modified the bolt and safety so it has the first series safety found on the M-70 instead of the Mauser-1903 Sringfield "Paddle wing" that interferes with a scope. It has a 26" stainless steel barrel and has had way over 10,00 rounds through it- NO throat erosion or wear on lands and grooves at all-
After he willed it to me I replace the Stith Scope with a Redfield, installed a Timney trigger, and replaced the "crapola- stamped sheet metal trigger guard and floorplate with a forged Blackburn one- duplicates the Model 70--
Now the M54 never had the hinged magazine and floorplate-but as I only load one round at a time in this old "dinger" and only use it for 'chucks, crows, prairie dawgs and fox/coyote marauders-not a problem. A .300 H&H M54 so altered- maybe different as that round is used for different game species and not usually for varmints-But a pal did a "Texas Heart Shot" on a coyote prowling for a lamb chop dinner on the ranch we were hunting in MT a few years ago- Boy Howdy- 180 grainer turned Mister 'Yote into a bloody blob of fur and poop!!

I've never tried to switch triggers so I can't help but suggest that you call Paul at G&H and ask him, they might even make it right.

I have a win 54 action and the bbl date is 1928 and its a 30-30. I once tried a canjar trigger in that action but after pulling the trigger the firing pin went as normal but the bolt could not be pulled back. However I once read an article about a converted 54 action that had the firing pin sear or cocking piece built up to model 70 specs. The model 70 cocking piece on my M70 match rifle has a long flat piece of metal that when in the fired position keeps pressure on the sear in the trigger. So at least this makes sense. Maybe one of the cocking pieces that brownell's sells for the model 70 could be fitted to a 54 striker assembly and tried out. By the way, surplus 1903 and 1903A3 striker tips can be used on the 54 firing pin if the old one is worn or bent. They are out there cheap enough. Hope this made sense. Frank

Thanks for the replies, I've found an unaltered m-54 trigger and it works with a double pull, which I'm OK with.[The G&H mod was to a single pull.] The m-70 type trigger would work with some modification I think, except that the bolt stop would not work to release the bolt for removal from the rifle. The later m-54 has a one piece firing pin, and not the springfield removable tip type. The number of my rifle is 50137. The "Blue Book" lists the last m-54 number as 50145; interesting.

The trigger pull on my M-54 30-30 seems to change from time to time and maybe from shot to shot. Has any one else had a similar experience?
I have a very late Newton 30-06 which I don't much like. But it as the reversed DST, which I like very much. Could that trigger be adapted to the M-54?

I have a 1927(maybe 1926)(serial just over 12000) Model 54 in .30 Gov't 06 and the trigger pull is really not all that bad for that type of trigger. I like the gun in it's original state. Besides, at this point in time, there's not much reason to mess with the trigger no an old 54.
I have hunted with it a few times and, in a hunting situation, the trigger pull is not an issue.
The George Madis book says there were 50161 Model 54s built.
The Roger Rule book says 50024 "standard" and 2005 "special Model 54s built for a total of 52029.
I believe the books much more that the worthless "Blue Book"!
